I just spoke with the recruiter, it looks like they will need more nurses this year and budget will be increased for it. So..it looks like people, including myself, will have a good chance of being selected for this board. I am applying for a med-surg position.

Do you handle HSPS for NPs currently in graduate school? Would I have to wait for 'board' selection, or can I sign up and receive benefits right away?

Yes, yes, no. All applicants must meet a board, unless you are a former or current commissioned officer.
For HPSP, you cannot receive tuition payments or monthly stipend until you are officially selected, commissioned and are on the paylog. There are 2 and 3 year scholarship available in certain approved MSN practitioner programs. The best time to start is when you are accepted. If you are close to graduating, then apply once you are board certified. If you get accepted while in school, HPSP will reimburse only the full school year you are currently in. There is no experience requirement for practitioners, although it is highly desired.

Is there different Boards for RN and NP? You mentioned July 2011 Boards. Would this include NP, or is there a later date? How would civilians know when the Boards convene? I graduate in May 2012. I was told that I may not qualify for HSPS even if I was selected for the 2012 Boards because I only have 3 semesters left in my program (Summer 2011-Spring 2012) and the 2012 Boards were around October.
All AF nurse applicants regardless of type apply for the same board dates. HPSP and DDA (direct duty accessions) usually get boarded when submitted.

Thanks IowaRn this sounds promissing. It has been a long grueling wait just to get to this board. Good luck to you and everyone who have been waiting!!!

Sharky,
So, if a former commissioned officer wanted to become active duty after a break in service, would they meet the same board as the fully qualified nurses?
Thanks!

i don't think that sharky will be on here anymore. your best bet would be to all your local healthcare recruiter and ask them. go here http://airforce.com/contact-us/recruiter-locator/ and type in your zip, click healthcare professions, and then click search.

Thanks for the link. However, Sharky seems to really know his stuff...more than most of the recruiters. He seems to have been doing this for a while. I've asked the DDA question ( I am still IRR) and have gotten different answers. Just an unusual case. Just thought I would get a quicker, more accurate answer. I'm waiting for my husband to retire before I attempt to go back in. Good luck on the upcoming board!
Anyone else know about coming back in active duty after a break in service?

Sharky will not be posting information directly to the boards here at allnurses.com. If you want to talk to him you will have to contact him via private message or directly. I do know that he sometimes post to the Nurse Corps facebook group. I would also look into the airforceots.com boards.
Hope this helps,

Has anyone heard anything yet from the July boards? I'm just curious as I am looking to go reserves if the active duty does not work out (I'm ICU and was already put on the back burner in the Nov board selection). Thanks!!!

I am a ICU nurse with over 5 years experience that is also waiting to hear back about the July boards. I was told that I would hear if I was accepted or not around the end of August. I am hoping this time around the answer will be yes. It sounds like there might be a few more slots than last time.
