Anybody out there applying to the UT Austin AEMSN program for summer 2012? Haven't seen any posts about our group of hopefuls yet.

Sure if you want! Congratulations!

Congratulations to all! Great job!

Congrats everyone!!! Yes, we should start a FB group.

I got in too!!! Congrats everyone! Surprised to hear this early

Hey yes FB group! I'm psych NP. Let's meet up!

so i'm doing my fafsa, and on the "dependency determination" page it mentions that you "may want to answer questions about your parents if you are a health profession/nursing student." anybody have thoughts on that? my folks won't be involved in paying for school even though they have some money, and i make very little i.e.

I didn't include my parents, but I've been married for a while. So, I'm not sure in your case what is best.

I'm in the same boat I don't know :(

Hey guys! So I was wondering if any of y'all out there are as concern as I am with how the job market looks for nurses right now. As I am reading more and more articles lately, apparently, this "shortage" of nurses that I've been hearing so often looks to be non-existent. Bottom line, I've been reading so many posts on new grads having a hard time finding jobs because hospitals won't hire them because of their lack of experience. In addition, the older and more experience nurses won't retire because of the bad economy and of course, hospitals would much prefer to keep them around since it's more cost efficient and there's no worries in having to train them because they know their stuff. Any thoughts out there about this? I'm just really thinking carefully about this career path because this is a 3 year program and it will be EXPENSIVE in terms of time and especially money. I'd hate to graduate and be way WAY in debt over something that will be difficult to get out of. Just thinking realistically now.

I think the job market is bad right now but I think it will get better in a few years or so I hope. There IS a nursing shortage its just that nobody is willing to hire to save money so hospitals are understaffed etc. I think in the short term things will be tough but long term I think nursing is a very smart decision. There are 900,000 nurses in their 50's and they won't be working forever. I am concerned about this too but I'm trying to trust that ultimately I'm going down the right path. Also, there are nursing loan forgiveness programs that might be possible to get etc. But I agree, I'm having some doubts too. My friend graduated recently from UT with her bsn and has yet to find a job.

Check this out: http://www.aacn.nche.edu/media-relations/fact-sheets/nursing-shortageAlso, I think different parts of the country are more saturated so it's tougher. I think as the economy gets a bit better and more nurses start to retire things will ease up. After all, it's hard to find a job in anything right now without experience it seems to me.

I'm just curious-- what drew y'all to the program/ nursing?
