Advise what u think isthe most sought ot nursing speciality

I am a new nurse, and i have been in med-surg for 8months and plan to stay for at least close to a year. Med surg has never been what i really want to do, but i was told to get that yr of medsurg exp to make me more well rounded. I agree med surd helps with prorities/time mang but i feel im not learning a lot. I feel i need another avenue to make myself more marketable. I look @ a few hospitals websites in maryland to see what are they hiring for. I have seen alot of er jobs,tele, less med surg. Do you gu feel working on a open heart unit or cardiac unit is better. I dont think i want to do tele because they play musical chairs, and er scares me from what i read, but will er may make me a better nurse? What are hospitals hiring for in different states?

the most sought after nursing career is one you feel satisfied with, and are proud of doing.

everyone has their nitch. There may be more demand for some specialties, but if you don't like it, or arn't good at it, what good is that?

In some places there is a high demand for NICU nurses. I wouldn't touch that with a ten foot IV pole!

I did Med Surge for years. In a way that is the least demand and the most demand all at once. High turn over. People go thrugh, get their 1 or 2 yrs experience, and move on. The ones that stay truly learn the job. Time management, prioritizing, and you do get a little bit of everything. (including, most of the time, the worst staffing ratio!)

look at what you wanted to do when you got into nursing. And see if there is a demand for that in your area.

I have only been a nurse for 5 years; and do not work in a hospital but from what I've noticed/read everywhere (medical + public sites) hospitals are primarily interested in whether you have a valid license AND are still alive-and-available.

What I am trying to say that with the current shortage you probably have the luxury of doing what YOU like/want.

At 63 years old I'd say doing what you like/LOVE---as I do now---will make you marketable simply because:

-you'll be working hard

-you'll be learning because it's interesting to YOU

-cheerful and pleasant to work with because you want to work there aka it's not just about the money.

I agree with doing what gives you satisfaction, however, if that interferes with practicalities like earning a living then reconsider.

I agree with the med/surg foundation and started my career that way. In fact, that was the only option at that time but it just seemed the thing to do and maybe so because I knew that was all that was on offer. But, I found it a good foundation.

In terms of learning, in med/surg you will get more of a bio-psycho-social experience and that is for me the most valuable education because you can not separate any part from the other. I later became an Adult NP and practiced in the ER then primary care where our clinics were very much holistically centered and I found to be good in primary care one needs to see all the parts of a client and how each piece interacts and affects the other. This brought the best results but frankly, it requires quite a bit of effort and emotional energy so one has to be interested in that.
