I may be having reconstructive surgury for a plexiform neurofibroma on my right orbit. I have had four surgeries before and the plastic surgeon that I have been a patient of wants a new doctor to take me on as a patient. The only problem I have with this is, the new doctor is not board certified in plastics. He did, however, do his fellowship in plastics under my surgeon. I do trust my surgeon, however, my worry is it is my face and I don't want it screwed up. I have an appointment with him on tuesday. I am not sure whether to say something about him not being board certified, ask him about it, or what. Also, if I do bring it up I don't know how I should do it. I need advise please.

I think I am going to go for it. My old surgeon has promised to atleast stop in during the surgury and afterwards to see how I am doing. The new guy says that even with everything that he is going to be doing I will only need to be in the hospital 1 night if that! I have usually been in for 3 days. granted that was seven years ago, but they were doing even less at that time. for everything i mentioned in my second to last post is one night a reasonable guess? I mean he is going to be cutting open my head to do it.
Well, if 1 night is what he predicts, it sounds reasonable. A lot has changed with all kinds of surgery in 7 years. But I have no experience whatsoever with this kind of surgery. I wish you lots of luck - it sounds like you've been through a lot for someone your age. You also sound like an incredibly intelligent, articulate and thoughtful person for someone your age!! I hope all goes well for you in the future. When is the surgery? We'll all be thinking of you here.
So is there nothing else I should ask him?
I would not want an orthopedic surgeon doing Plastic Surgery on me. The training is not the same and I would be concerned that he did not do a residentcy at a hospital in a Plastic Surgery dept. There has to be a reason he did not do this and it raises a lot of red flags for me.
Being trained by a Plastic Surgeon is not the same as doing a residentcy. As a resident , he would have been evaluated by several Plastic Surgeons during his training, not just by one.

This is how i had felt until i thought about how much i trusted my old surgeon...I trusted him beyond all belief...also if you read an older post i ended up asking him and he had done a resedency under my old dr. and had just not put it in his history...and the new guy did an unbeleviablely (sp) good job...I am thrilled with the results even though it is still swollen
Hi there....Im not a nurse either...YET!! anyways...but my psychology instructor told the class something that I will never forget....when you are a patient, the Dr. works for you, even tho the Dr. knows the medicine part of it, you as a patient know your body pretty well and each patient may or may not have a fear....either way let that doctor know what is on your mind at all times, if the doctor doesn't take the time to hear you our or doesn't seem "interested" , it just may be time for a different doctor or back to the "get a second opinion", good luck to you and GOD BLESS!

He did like that I came in with all my questions written down. He found it amusing that I had done my homework and looked him up. He said that with Neurofibromatosis he has never had any infections though he admitted to having them in kids with lymph problems which can cause the same facial abnormlties and that they are more prone to infection.
