Advice regarding job offers needed!

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

Hey All;

I am grateful to say I finally have a job offer, after months of looking. However, I might actually have another one in a few days, and I would like to consider it. The second job possibility wouldn't decide till next week, but I am chomping at the bit to finally give an official acceptance to a job.

Is it innapropriate to let the manager deciding next week that I have an offer on the table? Anyone think I should just wait and see? The timing is bad because I don't want to lose this official offer for one that may not happen!

Thanks

Wish I had that problem. :p That's a tricky situation. Let the first one know you'd like a couple of days to think about it and if you haven't heard from the other one by Wednesday I'd go for it. If the second one does call and it's a better fit, then you can let the first place know that you had another offer and thank them for the opportunity. Make a list of the pros and cons for both and decide if the first one is worth risking by waiting on the second.

If you wouldn't be starting the first job before you'll hear from the second, I'd say go ahead and accept the first. Then, if the second comes through, you can call and say you decided to take another job, and hope they accept your apologies for changing your mind...

Yes, inappropriate to prompt the second job for a response before they are ready. Also unprofessional to accept a position you are not certain you want. Remember, there are other candidates that have decisions to make as well. If you accept it, they will be told they do not have the position, and they will make decisions based on that information, and that is unfair.

Ask for one week to consider it. At the end of the week, if the other offer has not materialized, give the first place an answer and then keep your word.

Believe me, I never thought I would be in this situation. I am thrilled to have gotten such a quick offer; and the more I think about it, I am certain the first position is the best fit. It is a med-surg floor and I will learn all that not only I need to know, but that I WANT to know, and the manager and director were great. I do want it; but I wanted to have time to consider the other position. A biggie is that this med-surg job would eventually be nights, the other would be evenings. But most of us RN's will have to do those shifts.

I have decided to accept the first position. Blue Devil, I do feel very much for the other candidates; I was offered the position informally and they still had another interview! I felt much for that other person that would be interviewing for nothing. I have been looking for work since June, and have gone to interviews and never heard from anyone again, and that was torture! I do not want to keep anyone hanging.

I feel that because they literally snapped me up that it was meant to be. The second position would be inpatient rehab, which I would find interesting but on this med surg floor I can become chemo certified and learn all the great skills I only read about in books; inpatient rehab would not give me that type of opportunity.

Thanks for your answers and advice, and good luck to you that are still looking; it is amazing how the job will literally fall into your lap when the time is right.
