Advice re failed nursing course

Nursing Students Male Students

Published

Hey guys,

I am a nursing student at Bergen Community College and I just finished my 2nd semester but I unfortunately failed one of the classes and now I have to wait until the fall to retake the course and move on in the program. Can anyone who has ever failed a nursing course please give me some advice. It was devastating news for me and I am so angry and upset over it. I am willing to make any changes or do whatever it takes to pass and finish this program and become a nurse.

Thanks,

Jeff

If everyone cared and helped each other . In even a small way. World would be a better place .

Sterling remember when you get a change to forward me some of information you promised

Every class is different. What class were you not successful in?

I failed cardiac/respiratory. I did bad on the respiratory content.

Have you asked your fellow students what they did to study? During the semester did you not realize your study habits were not working? If you keep doing the same thing over and over nothing will change. Have you discussed this with your professor? I am not sure what anyone on here can do to help. If you are failing a class you need to get on it THEN. Now you may not even get back into the program and you have made your odds of becoming an RN much longer. Life is hard enough and you made it even harder on yourself. If you are really studying to the point you can't anymore then you should consider another career.

What worked for me was buying this book:

http://www.amazon.com/Saunders-Comprehensive-Review-NCLEX-RN-Examination/dp/1437708250/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1419529734&sr=8-1&keywords=saunders+comprehensive+review+for+the+nclex-rn+examination+edition+5

I bought the used version with the CD. I would do the reading for the section that was due for lecture to prep myself

what to expect for the lecture coming up. After the professor released the week's power points, I would print them out

and take notes during lecture. Other students recorded but I am not an audio learner so the method was not going to help me. If you listen well and can really focus to relisten lecture then record it (with permission from the professor). Next, I would go home

and review the notes I took on the power points during lecture and read the section discussed on the power points in my textbook again.

Then, I would compare what I learned and took out of lecture and reading the textbook to my Saunders Comprehensive Review for the NCLEX-RN 5e book. I would study the power points/notes/Saunders for a few days until I was sure I understood the content then I would find NCLEX-RN questions on whatever system I was working on. I would take roughly 200-300 questions on the content for the system alone but split into like 30-50 questions per day leading up to the exam.

That's my method. Its not as long as it seems writing it here but it worked for me.

I repeated a class too for clinical reasons but not for academic reasons. Always did get A's and B's on all of my nursing exams and this is how.

I hope this helps you.

As an instructor I have had to fail students, which is no fun for anyone. But, I've had some of the same students thank me later surprisingly. You have plenty of time to organize your life to be successful. It's important to accept what has happened and face the reasons you failed. Come up with multiple strategies to do better. Don't just hope that things will "turn out" better. Be sure to set aside time (one of the biggest challenges) for study, and look at your study habits. Good luck.

I was so upset and completely shocked that I failed by 2 points. I have faced the reality that I failed. I am more focused than ever and I know what I need to do next time when I retake the course next September. Thank you for the support and if you have any study tips or better ways to organize notes please help me out. I am willing to make any changes that I have to.
