Advice please!!! Lvn or rn?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Ok Just need a little advice or words of wisdom. I'm 23 years old and have decided during my junior year of college that nursing is really my dream ( great timing huh?). However I can't decide which route to take! I really need to get a job or career fast since I'm unemployed. Should I apply to be an LVN first THEN do an LVN bridge program or should I have patience and do the RN program ( meaning I probably would graduate until 2013 )?? Your advice would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!!!

Apply to both. Not sure if you have heard, but it is very difficult to get into a nursing program, so You want to have a back up. But unless you have already done all your prereqs, you are going to have to be patient either way.

i agree apply to both. Definitely finish out your current undergrad program and see if you can start taking pre-requisites for the nursing programs you want to apply to. Getting into a program can take a long time so finish what you are currently doing and prepare yourself while you wait to apply for a program. I didn't realize my dream of becoming a nurse until I was finished with my BA and working full time in a different field for a few years. I went back to school while working and eventually had to quit a year into my program. Its possible I know some people work while in the program but at the most part time.

Good luck! i'm happy you have found your calling to be a nurse!

Oh, and if you can I would try to go straight to RN. If you don't know much about the field of nursing and what it really entails you should do some research, as a general student (not from any medical field before getting into nursing school) I thought I knew what nursing was but quickly realized i didn't lol. luckily for me i really loved it all and have even more excitement to be a nurse.

Oh yes I'm WELL aware of how hard it is to get in nursing school. I am a biology major and have recieved all A's and one B in the required science courses, so hopefully that will help me out!!! Thanks for the advice!!

Go for your RN

I would say go straight to the RN program. Isn't the LVN program like half the length of the RN? Ours is here in Central California anyway. I say apply to both, but if you're dedicated and serious about putting forth the work to become an RN then do it. The money afterward will be worth it! Do what you feel is right for you!

RN if you can. As others have said, getting into a nursing program is challenging and will not happen in just a month or two. Most LVN programs in Florida are 16-18 months, RN programs are 24 months and the bridge from LVN to RN is 18 months....why go to school for 16-18 months just to go for another 18 months to get the RN? Then there is more time added to that if you want to go for a BSN or MSN.

Another thought, take a quick (and cheap) CNA course, get the CNA license and get a part time nurse tech job so you are getting experience, making a little money, and getting a leg up on the things you'll need to know for your first semester of nursing school.

Good luck!
