ADVICE PLEASE! Anatomy & Other Pre-reqs.

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

This semester I am taking Chemistry, Statistics, Nutrition, A&P, and Intro to Music 17 credits.

The third week of school is approaching and A&P is driving me insane :banghead: The class is so demanding and I have neglected my other classes in the procress of trying to keep up in A&P. The sad part about it is I still do not feel like I am dedicating enough time to this course, and it isnt by choice. I have a 9 month old, my husband plays football so he is extremely busy but tries to help around the house, and all our family is back home in CA. Okay enough about that, I was just wondering if it would be smarter to drop A&P (I can drop the course without a "W" before Sept 18 and it will not show on my transcript) and take it during a semester when I can my work load lighter so I can focus 110% on A&P. I dont want to get a C or B, I want an A. We have our first test tomorrow and I have studied so hard and yet I am still lost. I know I can understand the material if I was able to be completely immersed in it alone. Anatomy will be a major part of my nursing career and I want to fully understand it, not just try to get the grade. I know I can get As in all the other courses I am taking this semester but not if I had to take A&P as well.

Also, should I take microbiology and organic chemistry before A&P? Basically, would it be beneficial to just take A&P right before I enter nursing school (like the semester or two before)?

I know I was babbling so I hope you guys can understand what I'm asking. Any advice from someone experience would be great, or just any opinions please! I want to be competitive when I apply to a nursing school when I move back to CA. (UCLA, Azusa Pacific, Loma Linda, Cal-State Fullerton, etc.)

PLEASE HELP ASAP, thanks :wink2:

I would say to drop the a&p if it won't be held against you. 17 credits is a lot to handle in one semester! I think taking the nutrition class and a chem class before a&p will make a&p a little easier to understand.

There's a guy in my class who is taking a&p and micro at the same time and he says that the classes so far have covered pretty much the same thing (the first 3 weeks at least). I'm taking chemistry of life (combination of general, organic, and biochem) and a&p and I can say the same thing. Chapter 2 in our a&p book and the first 3 chapters of my chemistry book cover the same thing.

My a&p professor recommends a general chem class and a general bio class before taking a&p. Other than that, he said it didn't matter what order you took organic chem or micro compared to a&p.

Good luck with whatever decision you make!

Thank you! Thats what I was thinking..

The first 2 chapters we discussed were Cells and Tissues, and we went through both chapters in like 4 lectures which was really quick and I didnt feel like I really understood the way I wanted to. Cytology is very interesting and complex and I must grasp that information so that the rest of A&P will make sense.

So I will take Micro and organic chem next semester and A&P the following, which should make it easier

I took Anatomy and Phys prior to Chem... but since then, our school has changed the requirements and you must take Chem before you can take A&P.

There are some things you learn in Chemistry that really are helpful as far as Phys is concerned. I would drop the Anatomy now and take it after you've completed Chem.

Good luck! HTH's! :)

Hello!

My professor, who was also the head of the Sciences department, told us that the best path was Anatomy, then Physiology (we took them separately), then Chem, then Micro. I switched the micro and Chem simply because I was afraid of the intensive one-semester Chemistry class. lol

I feel it's however you feel will fit you better.

Have you considered taking the exam and seeing how you did, and then making a final decision? You are taking a lot of tough classes right now, but might do better than you think. All the best!

My teacher advises that we take chem and biology before her A&P class as well. I think it would be smart to just drop it and take it when I am completely prepared. Thanks for the advice! :yeah:

I take the first exam today at 12:30, I will see how I do but as of right now I am considering officially dropping it, if it is already stressful in the first few weeks, then I dont want to get too far in and realize i should have just dropped it.

Thanks again guys for all the advice it is a ton of help to hear from people who have been there before :)

Alana,

That is a heavy load, you might want to drop something. I recommend that you find out the drop date, then stay in all of your classes until that day. On that day, decide which class you are doing the worst in and drop that one. Most of my instructors are well aware of the drop date and try to have the second test back before then. This way you can drop the class with the lowest average to save the GPA. By staying in the class for as long as possible, you can make it easy on yourself the next time you take it. This is an often used technique for making good grades. At most schools, anything over 12 hours is free, so you have nothing to lose by doing this, just watch that date like a hawk. Going to college not only teaches you the academics, it teaches you how heavy a load you can handle or are willing to handle. It teaches you how to juggle various things. What these things are (children, spouse, job, drinking, running your own company, sports, etc. etc.) will vary with each student. The different things that I juggle tend to change each semester, ie camping and fishing in the summer. Which classes I need, what time of day they are given, which campus, which school, which teacher(ratemyprofessor.com), many variables go into determining which class I would register for. Keep in mind that the school you are transfering to will likely look at only your science grades, and not at your grades from music, math, english and such. From what I understand it is tough to get into nursing school in CA. Now that I am in the clinical nursing classes, it is less of a chore to decide what class to take next. Good luck on your education.

Chemistry is definitely beneficial before A&P or at least at the same time. I have already taken A&P I & II and I am so glad that I had chemistry first. It really helps in understanding certain concepts (such as nerve impulses, muscle contractions, and metabolism) if you have a good understanding of the ions involved and how they react in the body. I am taking microbiology this semester and I think having taken chemistry will help a lot there too. Good luck to you!

Thanks for the advice :yeah:. I took the first Anatomy test today and I didnt feel as confident as I should have and I know I will not get the grade I want. I am going to stay in the class for a few more days to feel out the teacher and prepare myself for when I have to take it again. I will just focus on other course load and make sure I get As in all of those. I rather get good grades in the classes rather than just try to get them out the way.

Thanks!

Okay so I will definitely take Chem and Micro before A&P. I want to be prepared.
