Advice for nursing assistant in hospital?

Published

So I decided that I am most likely going to have to take the the nursing assistant job on the telemetry/med surg floor over the other job. Any advice before I start? I go for the physical Tuesday the 10th and back the 12th. Orientation is the 23rd..not sure if its a one day thing or not. I would appreciate a heads up on anything that may give me a slight advantage, what to do/not to do. Im hoping they give an uniform allowance. Can anyone recommend good shoes to wear for being on your feet all day (just in case I have to pay out of pocket (not super expensive)? Before I went for medical assisting...I was in the Rad tech program and the women told us something about these stockings so you dont get varicose veins (which my mom has). I bought a pair a while back..dont know if I still have them or if they were the right ones. Thank you :)

I've worked in two hospitals and never had a uniform allowance. Buy a pair of walking shoes from the store. Wal-Mart sells scrubs. I say just work hard and work fast. Learn how to manage your time. I worked med surg for 8 months and never stayed late and I saw plenty of other girls who just started charting when I left.

Thanks. I was hoping to maybe get an allowance, since I am pretty much broke now. I will have to see how things go, and what the schedule is like there, and maybe I can ask for more advice on how to manage time.

I agree work hard and quick... if you don't know how to do something or you don't understand ask for help... take time and listen to the patients... there is never down time always ask for something to do... for example when I have my work done I ask the nurses if they need help... if they don't I go look for something... for example checking expiration dates on items... GOOD LUCK

I have walking/running shoes and found that it wasn't good enough for clinicals (my back hurt!)... So I bought Dr. Scholl's Lower Back shoe inserts. Worked wonders!

Also, support hose... My mom is a nurse and that was her second demand after shoes. She has tons of varicose veins and said that support hose was necessary. I have "Full Support" hosiery from Nurse Mates. They are tight but they're supposed to promote good circulation. :)

I've been on med/surg telemetry for 4+ years as a CNA, and let me tell you-you probably won't have any downtime. If there is any go and ask your patients if they need to use the bathroom or if they need anything, go around and check everyone in order as you have time. Don't be afraid to ask the RN of your patient for help doing something with the patient, also don't be afraid to ask another cna for help. Just show everyone you are there to be part of the team (help them out too) and they will reciprocate.

Also I've worked in 2 hospitals and have gotten $100 and $60 uniform allowances (the 60 was for shoes because it was O.R. and the uniform was furnished)

I am also starting a hospital CNA position on May 23rd, 2011. Our orientation in Monday-Thursday. We get vouchers for 4 sets of scrubs. I would say that any good pair of tennis or running shoes would work (as long as the meet your dress code requirements).

What floor will you be on? It would really be great if we get vouchers for uniforms! They havent really explained much at all yet, so we will see. My first orientation day (not held at hospital), is Monday the 23rd. Good luck.
