Advice needed, please!

Hey everyone!

I'm currently in the process of applying to some ABSN programs in the area, and a couple of Direct-Entry MSN programs (Massachusetts). With deadlines coming up for applications to be sent in, prepping for the TEAS V/GRE, and finishing up a couple more pre-reqs (including Organic Chemistry and Pathophysiology), I'm wondering if taking up a part time job as a CNA might be overdoing it?

I would really like to gain some hands-on experience with patient care, although it's not necessarily required for admission to the nursing programs (doesn't hurt though!). I'm worried that by taking up a position as a CNA, I might become burnt out with the job, thus affecting my performance in my final pre-req courses, exams, etc.

Would working as a CNA be too much for my workload? I'm also looking into volunteering and working retail part time in a less-stressful environment as an alternative, at least until the year is over and most of my applications have been sent in.

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for your time.

    If you're planning to work somewhere, get experience as a CNA. It might help you get a few references or open opportunities to your employer helping you with school expenses.

    What does your state require for you to become certified? When I got a CNA 20 years ago the nursing home where I worked offered a week long class and then I just had to take the certification test. But now in my state you have to do an intensive, and costly program to become a CNA. With all you have going on it might be a bit much.

    Good luck on being accepted to a good Nursing program.

    I have been certified since April of 2013. I was just wondering if taking up a job might be too stressful for me.

    If you have the CNA is would be smart to pick up a couple shifts a week to keep your certification current.

    Everyone is different, so only you know if you can handle the work along with your other school and family obligations.
