Advice needed please

Published

I interviewed today as a newgrad RN with Fresenius at a chronic care outpatient clinic. They will send me for training and it takes 6 mo before you are flying solo. I feel that is a great training program as I fear being thrown in without more education. Their pay in my area of Colorado is under $22 an hour. Benefits are at 90 days. How does this sound to anyone who knows what it is all about? I am also concerned...what if I don't like it after a year or so, is it hard to then get a job at a hospital? Is it the same sort of thing as if you start in a nursing home..(no offense to anyone working geriatrics)?? Is it considered viable experience for any other floor other the dialysis??? Lastly, does anyone do travel dialysis work and what is the future looking like for this area of nursing?? Please, I really appreciate your seasoned advice since I am so new.

Thanks in advance.

Hello I am about to start as a new grad at FMC can you gibe me any tips tell me how it went for you ?

I started with FMC a couple of months ago as a new grad and have really enjoyed it thus far. I did have a couple of years of experience on a med-surg floor working while I was in school. I think your clinical manager makes all the difference in the world. Mine is very helpful in helping me think through situations and understanding dialysis. Hope this helps a little.

Yes it does. I cant wait to start training. I have experience as a LPN in long term care, 30 patients so I am used to being very busy and am no stranger to hard work. The manager seems to be very nice. Only thing I am very nervous about is being the only RN on the floor, but that months down the line. Are you on your own yet?

Thanks for your help

No, I'm not on my own yet. My clinical manager is there with me. Although at this point I am trying to use her only as a resource. I find that I learn better by doing instead of watching. I do ask her a lot of questions especially when it comes to setting goals for pt's and interventions. I won't be "on my own" for quite a while. I believe it is policy to have at least 6 months on the floor before you are alone. I think having a manager that is open to answering questions and explaining why things happen the way they do is very important. I hope that you find you have the same experience!

Lol, what about "no offense" to anyone working in dialysis? This is a specialty field. It's not like a no-brainer job.

I love my FA at my Davita clinics. She is awesome, and she taught me everything I learned as a PCT and eventually as a new nurse. She teaches me lots of things about the clinic management side of things as well.

I do not care for the clinical manager at my FMC clinic. She is arrogant, demeaning, and unfair to her employees. She uses and abuses them, talks down to them as if they are children, and expects them to do whatever she says. She changes the schedule, does not notify the affected teammates, then writes them up for being absent.
