I think it depends on what kind of jobs you are interested in... LTC, school health, agency, etc.

Many people are under the assumption that LTC/SNF will not utitlize the skills/techniques you learned in school. So far from the truth. In my first month of working as an LPN I had done more things than I could even begin to imagine. As well, SNF is no longer just for Grandma and Grandpa, many younger people need the services offered by SNF/rehab.
More and more, the old school 'chronic' care LTC/SNF is getting more and more actue-subacute patients being admitted. With insurances the way they are people are being D/Cd from hospital far sooner than they are really ready. The are too unstable/sick to go home but they are deemed stable enough to leave the hospital acute setting. Guess where those patients end up...you got it SNF.
Many facilities have rehab, subacute care units, you can and will learn a lot of new things and you will use what you were taught.
You need to know your meds, their side effects (esp on geri pts) and what to look for.
I am very thankful for my employment in SNF. I have used so much of what I was taught in school, learned a lot of new things and haven't lost anything. I'm not sure if you are interested in bridging over to RN, but if you are, SNF experience will make the clinicals an even lecture make more sense.
I won't lie, SNF/LTC/rehab can be very intimidating at first, but it isn't long before you fall into a routine and you are comfortble in your position. I wish you the best.

i'm having the same problem. i was concerned i'd be overwhelmed being newly licensed but can't find a job. i've applied everywhere. i have 3-4 yrs exp. as an MA/phlebotomist. no facility will touch me w/o having 1 yr exp in ltc. went door to door and most places won't take my resume. they say to apply online which i've done. i really don't know what else to do. i'm in NY but i hear nj has more of demand for lpns. keep me posted as to how you do. i'd love to hear. a friend of my started looking in to agencies that give training before they send you out which has you shadow an lpn/rn 4-5 days before they put you on the floor. that's my next step. good luck! and thanks for sharing
Thank you for all the good advice !
