Good luck!!!

I just took the AANP Adult-Gero NP exam yesterday and did NOT PASS. I'm very much devastated at this point. Not sure where I went wrong, nevertheless, I have now registered to take the ANCC exam and will be awaiting my authorization to test (unsure as to how long that will take to get, AANP processed and I had ATT all within a month). Of course, I have a job lined up and this was a major set back, which is requiring them to graciously revise their plans, leaving me to take a hard look at my study plan and revamp it; I averaged about 5-8 hours/day for the 2 weeks just prior to the exam, before that I was slowly breaking the sections down and took a review course and completed the Fitzgerald study guide and CDs. I looked today for a live review course and unfortunately, the first available are mid-March (Fitzgerald, APEA, and Barkley) for the AGNPs. I assume the delay in study material and review courses are because the two certifying bodies just began offering the exam in January. I wish you the best, which exam will you be taking and maybe I can give you a little direction if it is the AANP??

Hey, thanks for writing. First I want to say I'm sorry you didn't pass....I can only imagine what you are going through, having a job lined up and all. I am suppose to start my new job on Monday, 2/2/13 so this could be uncomfortable if I do not pass. My instructor "forgot" to post final grades at the end of the semester so I wasted one month trying to get my final transcript corrected so that I could apply to sit.

AANP was fast so I'm taking the Adult-Gero through AANP. I also registered for ANCC but they are taking much longer to process my application (they are my back up plan). I know that if you pay ANCC $200 they will process your application in one week provided they have all of your supporting documentation.

I am nervous that I might not have covered everything that I need to or will be weak in some areas (Professional Role and Policy). I used the Fitzgerald review book, QBank, my old textbooks, drug guides and.....savng the best for last...Wikipedia......gosh, people laugh at Wiki but if it wasn't for that resource I would have had a hard time passing pathophsiology and pharmacology. It is concise and as far as I can tell accurate when I have cross referenced facts. So we will see how it goes.....I'll post on Sunday, one way or another.

Any tips or coaching appreciated.....Carole

Thanks, LoveNeverDies and DidiRN!

Hi! Thanks for your kind response. I am now over the shock and am working out my next study plan. There was absolutely no professional rule/policy questions on the AANP. Of course I'm not sure where my overall lack of knowledge was in but I would suggest making sure you understand medications for the elderly. Believe it or not, this applies to many questions--whether it be a first line antibiotic therapy, a safety question, most appropriate, Alzeimer's and Parkinson's. I may have concentrated too much of my study in the adult portion and not enough of the Gero. Good luck, stay calm, and let me know!

MMK,

I took AANP today and passed it. But it was a very hard test. I used all of two hours and 15 minutes for a first pass and another 30 minutes to try and answer the approximately thirty questions that I "marked" for review. I feel like you, that I'm not sure where I want wrong while studying to feel so insecure while taking it. It's an entirely different way of thinking that my clinical experiences ill prepared me for. I'll be interested to see my scoring.....I'm thinking I just scraped by I'm sure that if in two years from now after practicing I had to take the test it would not be such a big deal. Like you said, there was not one professional question but I only had two Alzheimers questions that were totally basic and one Parkinson's question that was so impossibly easy that I almost wanted to second guess. I paid for two of Barkley's DRT tests and the way they asked the questions was similar to the AANP style but it was weird because both of the AGNP test of theirs seemed to be filled with reproductive and contraceptive health questions.

I'm taking the ANCC, too, and have been approved but I have not signed up for it yet. Because of what my school did, I was not sure which organization would be faster in processing so signed up for both. Since I already paid for it, I'm going to take it. Do you want to be online study-buddies? If so, feel free to email me at [email protected] I've got some study guides you might want. Or, I'm on FB.

Talk to you later, Carole

And I wanted to say.....Wikipedia was probably as good as my Fitzgerald book for details. I bought the ANCC book and it provided a great outline and will probably be a good book to have in clinical practice for prompts but it is so sporifice on details (it assumes that you know every disease, medicine and diagnostic) that most of what they summarized I had to look up on Wiki to flesh out. However, I assumed that the test maker is going to cover most if not all items in their book. Fitzgerald fleshed out topics but not entirely and didn't cover a lot of things that I saw on the AANP test but saw elsewhere.

Carole,

CONGRATS!!! That is so awesome and I am truly happy for you :) I'm also curious to see what my final scores were, I'm not sure if I'd be happier to see if I just barely didn't pass or if I lacked in everything, no matter---I still want to know. It's interesting that you are taking both exams, wish I would have thought about it at the time. Nevertheless, I would love to do some online studying with you and any study guides would be helpful. I'm very committed to passing this time (to myself and to my employer that's waiting for me to pass--you know, no pressure or anything....lol!!) I will email you today and we can talk about it some more. For now, CELEBRATE :))))))

Taking the adult gero aanp the end if September. Wondering what specific test questions they asked. I heard a lot of STI / thyroid. Anything on Parkinson's / Alzheimer's / obgyn / anemias etcc. Looking for help. Congrats to all who passed.
