I was a charge nurse at a LTC facility and have been promoted to ADON. I am still expected to work every other week end. I would like to get off the week ends except to possibly rotate call with DON and MDS nurse. Do ADON typically work week ends?

I don't know a single A-DON that works weekends where I live. Granted I only know a few... but. They either have M-F day shift 6a-2p... or M-F eve shift 2p-10p. Sounds like not much of a promotion. Do you still have to work every other holiday too? We have one Clinical manager that works one Saturday every 3rd weekend of the month. Otherwise its just us floor nurses and one extra of us is "in charge" on the weekends.

My ADON works 4 - 10's per her choice, all during the week. The only time she would need to work a weekend is when she is on-call and gets called in (maybe once a year). She rotates call with 6 others.

I was an ADON and wasn't scheduled to work weekends and my ADON didn't work weekends either. OF course both those facilities were very large. Perhaps if it is a smaller facility they really need you to stay on the weekend.

Doesn't matter what we all do - do you have a contract that spells out your hours? (I do ) if you don't , and if the facility needs you- I think you have to show some flexibility. If its a problem, sit with the boss and work it out. This is the type of thing you work out before starting a new position
