I'm not sure where to ask this so I thought I'd ask here.

My question is, currently I'm a ADN student and I would like to know if I am eligible to sit for the LPN exam after this first year? Are there certain states that allow this?certain schools? I do plan on finishing my RN but I figure if I do have the option of sitting for the LPN exam I might as well go for it.

So would anyone know how this works or how I could go about finding out?

The best way to find out is to check with the BON in your state. Different states vary some will allow an RN student to take the NCLEX-PN after three semesters and others only allow PN graduates to sit for the NCLEX-PN.

You can do LPN after your first year. You can do the CNA after your first semester. I would ask your nursing department office. That is what most of the people who did this did while i was in school. Also the other thing you might think about is an extern program. You do cna work during the summer between your 1st and 2nd years. I know of a few who did this plus you will get to work in different areas so you can get a feel of what you want to do when you are done. Hope this helps.

I'm sure it depends on the state you're in. I completed my first year of my ADN program and then had a baby 3 weeks before I was supposed to return for my second year. I chose to take time off to stay at home even though my school would not hold a spot for me. I essentially had to wait for someone to drop out of 3rd semester in order for me to get in so I inquired about sitting for the LVN exam so I would at least not lose everything I'd worked so hard for in case I didn't get back in to the RN program. The director told me I could not sit for the exam unless I had a minimum of 5 years experience on the floor as a CNA before nursing school.:angryfire I did not have the experience but fortunately my school got a grant and let me back in 18 months later. I now graduate in December! Yipee!!!

This is in Calfornia, BTW

In WI, if you have completed the first two semesters of the ADN program through the technical schools, you are eligible to sit for the LPN NCLEX.....however, you are required to take the CNA class BEFORE nursing school.

I would also recommend checking into a Nurse Tech program. I was paid less than an LPN, but it was worth the learning experiences! (and no, I was not just a glorified CNA-I worked under an RN and did all of the skills that I had checked off on in school...got to do assessments, pass meds, push IV meds, etc...)

Thanks everyone for your help
