I currently got to Kaplan (now renamed Brightwood) for their Patient Care Tech program. It was the only way for me to pursue my CNA at night while working my regular 9 to 5 during the day. My goal is to become an RN but I have two kids ( one which is only 2 months) and I'm 28 years old so time is not on my side. I want to take the fastest route possible so that I can improve my family's financial position. The fastest route is to go through Kaplan (aka Brightwood) b/c there is no wait list and the odds are I'll get accepted on my first try (not a good chance but better odds than the community college). Problem is they charge a ridiculous $57K for the ADN program. $57K for an Associates!!!! I work in Financial Aid for a living so I know better but its still a hard decision. If I go the community college route, it will be almost 2 years before I can even apply due to the prereqs that I still need. And even then Grossmont College doesn't have a waitlist, its very hard to get in so who knows how long it will take for me to be accepted. By the time I could even apply to Grossmont, I could be done with my ADN at Kaplan. However Grossmont's program only cost roughly $5-6K and I currently qualify for tuition waiver so there is a chance I wouldn't have to pay at all.

$57K for an ADN and be done two years from now and working or go the community college route and it be almost 5 years before I finish, assuming I get accepted on the 1st try. Please provide any advice you have.

You were able to attend PLNU with a degree from Kaplan? They don't have the same accreditation. It is because you have your RN license so it doesn't matter which school you got your ADN at? Are you paying for your BSN out of pocket? B/C the undergrad loan gap is the $57K which is what Kaplan charges for an ADN. So I wouldn't have federal student loans to use.

Yes PLNU is a great fully accredited school with a great reputation and they accept Brightwood students. As does university of Arlington Texas, Grand Canyon university, west coast university, western governors, university of San fransico and a few more. All of those schools are fully accredited as well. I'm using some loans and some out of pocket. I'm hoping to get a job soon after I am able to test for the NCLEX so I can just pay fully out of pocket, but I'm not worried at all and I do not regret my decision, I just regret I didn't do it sooner.

So when it came to paying for the ADN at Brightwood , how did that work. Financial Aid isn't enough for each year. So I'm assuming most students are in payment plans. If you don't mind me asking, did you have to have the 1st years balance paid off before you could start the 2nd year? I'm not gonna be able to afford monthly payments as I'm already gonna have to go from full time to part time. So I'll be struggling to make ends meet as is. Wondering if they will just let me wait till the end of the program to pay. I mean I know they will require a payment plan. But in the PCT program, everyone had a payment plan but no one was making payments.

Since I had 30% off due to military discount, loans covered everything except the last semester for me and I was able to come up with payments.

I do believe they want you to do payment plans and im not sure they would let you wait to pay. They are for profit, so you know they want that money lol but most of my classmates who didn't have my discount took out private loans to cover the difference if they couldn't pay.

DomoniqueH: Please don't spend 57K for an AD. It's too much money and for-profit schools have miserable graduation and retention rates. Just look at what happened to the students recently when the dreaded ITT tech shuttered like thieves in the night.

Even though that happened to that school along with MedTech in Indiana there are still other schools out there that are booming with graduation rates. You need to research before just going in on places.

You’re right! Did Brightwood make it?

I’m in a similar situation as a SAHM at age 30 with a 1 year old and wanted to add a second child next year. I’ve been toying with nurses school for 7-8 years and never had the time because of the prereqs and because I worked full-time. But guess what? The time passes by anyway. I realized recently that all this time I didn’t want to be on the waiting list at CC I could have been done already! I have accelerated options near me but we are talking 45-70k vs. $10,000 or less.

I’ve decided to just do the prereqs I need and get on the waiting list at my local CC which is the best in the state and close to our parents to help with childcare. Yes, there are other more appealing options and I don’t want to wait years but the time is passing me by whether I do it or not. Might as well get started and keep working in the meantime!
