Adequate notice

Hi,

How much notice do you think that I should give my current job before I start a new one? Is one month an appropriate amount of time? I intend to give my boss as much time as she says she needs, but if I get hired for an NP position that is currently open, I know they will want me to start soon. Obviously no one that hires me would expect me to start right away, I just want to have this clear in my mind so I don't short change anyone, including myself.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

I think one month is more than adequate. That gives them enough time to work out a plan for replacing you. Many people feel 2-3 weeks is sufficient, but I think it would be really considerate and professional to give a month. However, bottom line is that you have to do what's best for you. If you get a fantastic job offer from a place that wants you to start in 3 weeks, then you have to go for it. However, I think a prospective employer would be impressed by the courtesy you want to show your current employer-it shows your character and professionalism.

In my practice 90 days is considered the norm.

Same here - 90 days.

It takes a while for the Practice to find and employ another mid-level, physician, etc.

If you have a contract, it should be addressed there. If not, maybe you can negotiate a time that would benefit everyone..........?

This will be a career shift for me. I'm currently working as an RN on an acute care floor at a large teaching hospital. I'm moving on to my first NP position. My hospital definitely has a lot of applicants and nurses who would be happy and qualified to take my position. Do you think the 90 days applies in this case?

No, the 90 day notice would not be applicable here.

Normally in this situation, the nurse gives anywhere from 2 weeks to 1 month's notice, depending on the job description/duties involved with the Practice.

I resigned from my job 2 days ago. Co-workers and other nurses told me you give notice based on how many weeks of vacation to are entitled to that year. In my case that was two weeks but when I spoke with my nurse manager I asked her first what was required. She said "2 weeks". You don't want to burn any bridges...so just ask.

When I was under contract it was 90 days. Right now with one position its a two week notice but I have already let them know that another job has been lined up.

I gave less than 2 weeks once to a 'take and bake' pizza place. I actually just didn't show up for work. I was a bad doobie. Other than that, I've always given 2 weeks or greater :)
