Accreditation (i'm doomed)

Published

i am an 4th year nursing student in an unaccredited nursing program, my school is a nationally accredited establish university in my country, but our BSN program is fairly new started (2009). Before i started they express that the first cohort needs to graduate before they can apply for accreditation, they did however state that the program is Approve by the nursing council of my country. Therefore i will be able to sit my local boards and practice as an RN, which was proven to be true to me this year as some of my seniors have already taken the boards and landed jobs. i contacted my school and they expressed that they have begun the process for accreditation, i am however worried though. My concern is, will CGFNS credential/approve an unaccredited program to sit for the NCLEX?, in other words would i be wasting money in applying to CGFNS for credentials only to be denied, and would state BONs that don't require CGFNS to sit NCLEX even consider my application?

If other people in your school applied and took the nclex, why would you have any problem?

no, they took the local boards in my country, not NCLEX.

anybody with any knowledge of these things?

What state do you wish to apply? Look at the BoN requirements for applying for a nursing license by examination as an internationally educated nurse. You won't be able to be successfully assessed in Australia.

The best answer is always study in the country where you wish to live and practice. Your schoolmates were licensed in country as the school meets your country's standards. Even if accredited there is no guarantee that your education & training will meet the standards of any other country

thanks for your response, i want to apply in the state of Florida, i understand what your saying which is why there are bodies such as the CGFNS to evaluate whether our education is equivalent to the standards of U.S. however my concern is, does CGFNS care whether or not your program was accredited in the home country?

CGFNS follows the standards of the state boards. For example many states consider Filipino BSN = US diploma as the first year of college in the Philippines is = to senior HS year in US, one state strictly critiques all overseas credentials and other states feel BSN = BSN.

Look at the requirements for FL BoN. If graduation from an accredited school is required you have your answer.

Thank you again very knowledgeable indeed, i check the site and it basically stated that my BSN needs to be evaluated by an approved agency (cgfns) http://floridasnursing.gov/forms/licensure-info-edu-outside-us.pdf didn't mention anything about accreditation, therefore i'm thinking the merits of my BSN is contingent on the evaluation of CGFNS.

No one here can give you an accurate answer other than FL BoN. You can always email the BoN your query.

thanks again and will do :)
