Accepted two job offers, but one orienation interferes with the other. Help!

Published

So i just graduated in may have finally received and accepted two job offers. One is a per diem position at a nursing home. The other is a part time position in a doctors office. My problem is that the orientation for the nursing home is scheduled for three days in a row, one of the days in which I am suppose to be training at the office. Its possible that I could do both on that one day, but only if I am working in the evening at the office and the nursing home is during the day ( they have not given be my exact time, but i do know i will be working on that day). I have not started either job and need some advice on what to do. Im not sure if it would be possible to ask for that day off at the office or to switch it ? Would it be a bad idea to tell the office I have a per diem job? This is the only time I ever see these 2 jobs coming in conflict ... ugh.

Yes it would be a very bad idea to tell your permanent position that you have a per diem position at this point in the game. Taking time off from your permanent position to work at a per diem position is never a good idea, IMO.

I would ask to reschedule the SNF orientation for some time that will not conflict with the office position. I agree with Kel that it would be a bad idea to take chances with a permanent position because of a per diem position, esp. at the orientation stage.

Thanks guys for the advice. The reason I was considering trying to get the orientation done when they asked is because the per diem job pays ten dollars more than the office. If I ask to reschedule is it possible they say no and retract the offer???

Consider that each employer expects to be your priority, and one may not be willing to rearrange orientation for the sake of the other.

You can certainly ask one employer to rearrange their orientation...and I agree with the others, if you ask this of one, it should be the per-diem job you ask, but that's up to you. However, if they tell you "no", then you need to make a decision between the two positions.

Best of luck.

Don't take per diem. Go for doctors office because hospital like Kaiser looks for outpatient setting or acute setting experience if you decide to work in a hospital later on.

It is possible that the per diem job could retract the offer if you ask to reschedule orientation. However, it's also possible that the permanent office job could retract the offer if you need to take a day off during orientation (esp. if they find out that it is to orient on another job). There are always prn jobs around. Permanent part-time jobs, not so much.
