Accepted into nursing sxhool, but question about background check.

Published

It is required to get a background check done! I'm concerned because I have a suspended license because I didn't pay a ticket. Now I have a bench warrant out, but I can't just pay off what i owe. I either have to get an attorney to go to court to allow me to pay my fees and end the warrant. Or I have to turn myself in and get my dad to bail me out. I'm 21 with no other history except speeding tickets. Were trying to get it taken care of ASAP but Attorneys are very expensive. Help!will they deny me entrance into the program? Will it show up? I'm freaking out. I've been trying to get in for over a year and I got in, but I just dk what to do. :(

If it wasn't dealing with any type of assault or drugs, you should be fine. The best thing for you to do is pull Mrs. ****** to the side during orientation and tell her about your problems. She will understand.

I also would suggest calling your nursing program -- sooner rather than later.

At our orientation, they STRONGLY encouraged people to reveal any potential issues BEFORE the background check as it makes you look untrustworthy/suspicious if something pops in the check. The primary concern was felonies as NO clinical sites (in our state) will allow those with felony convictions. Misdemeanors were (generally) not going to be deal breakers. Even having been charged with a felony (but not convicted) was not supposed to be an issue, but a felony conviction was an absolute deal breaker.

Get on a payment plan and get the warrant quashed. At my school, they look for any arrest, and drug convictions. Might want to be honest with the school, come clean before the background check brings it up. Honesty might just save you

Not to be a killjoy here, but applying for nursing school with a warrant won't work. Get it taken care of first.

That's actually not true. I applied with a warrant and had no problem. Didn't even show up on my background check. All arrests show up (dismissed, expunged, or otherwise) but warrants are not an arrest, and any charges here are misdemeanor traffic violations, which also don't count.

Not that I recommend walking around with warrants, but sometimes it takes some time to get the money together. I had tickets I totally forgot about from 7 years ago that suddenly popped up and the county wanted $600 just to START the payment plan. I had to wait until we got our tax return to pay it off. Stuff happens.

Thanks for everything guys:) My orientation is July 18, background check money is due by the 13th. So I have to go back to the school for financial aid stuff, so I will make an appt to speak to the nursing director!

I have been told that the major things they are looking for are anything like assaults, robbery, stuff that is like really severe. If you have a record of beating someone with a gun they probably won't let you in. However, if it is just a speeding ticket or a parking ticket, I can't imagine them not letting you in. The board will probably ask you to make an appearance. At that time, I suggest you be upfront and honest. Tell them why it hasn't been handled and what it is you got the ticket for. Tell them you are in the process of handling it and that you will give them any information they may need to verify what you say. It should go smoothly from there! Hope all is going well!

I'm sure this is no big deal. I know at my university (Eastern Kentucky University) if they do find something on your background check, they give you a chance to explain it! But they usually just look for things like drugs, abuse, violence, and things like that! Good Luck! : )
