Accepted job at NYP-Cornell!

U.S.A. New York

Published

Hey folks...

Happy New Year to all!

With this New Year comes a new job. I accepted a position at New York Presbyterian Hospital (Cornell). The interview process took several months but I was finally offered a pediatric position at this GREAT hospital. I am extremely excited to get started.

I do have a dilemma. I've heard nightmares about the pre-employment pharmacology exam sponsored by the NLN.

I am reviewing old textbooks and made up some medication flashcards but still feel somewhat overwhelmed.

Are there any nurses out there who have taken this exam recently? If so, I would appreciate any feedback.

NOTE: I am aware of the old threads about this subject. (OLD THREADS).

Thanks again for your time.

Hi everyone! I'm really interested in working at NYP after I graduate this May. I was wondering if anyone could provide me with the recruiter email address because I can't seem to find it online.

I was also wondering if anyone knows if I could start working as a "graduate nurse" before passing my NCLEX at NYP?

Thanks.

Mermaid135, the only way to apply is to the New Grad Waitlist posting that is put on job sites at end of each semester. Recruiters do not give out their emails to avoid getting flooded with emails from thousands of new grads. So just look for the New Grad Waitlist job post.

NYP gives preference to internal candidates, meaning those that already work at NYP in some capacity for example, CNA, Unit Clerk, Patient Companion, etc. Then those that have to ever mentioned "Connections"/know someone that works at NYP. After that, New Grads with related experience such as CNA or EMT at other hospitals are considered. If you dont have related health experience, know someone or already work at NYP, chances are very slim to get in as a New Grad. And to interview you do not license however it is expected that by the time you start, you have passed NCLEX. NYP also sends these emails "Many of our finest nurses join NYP after having worked a year elsewhere. We encourage you to apply to NYP once you get 1 year of experience elsewhere". Which is not nice to expect us to get hired by another hospital then after a year, to abandon ship on the other hospital who was nice enough to give new grads a chance and take our experience to NYP, who did not want to train us in the first place just because we had no connections or job in the hospital.

hi everyone! i am hoping to try and get some answers regarding applying to positions at NYP. i currently have 9 months experience working as a RN on the high risk ante/postpartum and GYN surgery unit. I am applying for positions and my application keeps getting rejected I get a notification that says basically i do not have 1 year experience and to try again after I do, but the job posting only says 1 year preferred. Anyone know why this is happening?

Why? Well the simple answer is because you don't meet the requirements. Wait a full year and then apply.

I asked because there are postings that say 1 year preferred not required. i already know i do not meet the requirements for the posting that say 1 year required.

Disregard the word preferred....why it is put on the NYP postings? No one knows. A friend and I applied to NYP postings that said "1 year preferred" several times when we had 8 and 9 months experience in oncology and pediatrics, respectively. We got messages that we do not qualify also whether for inpatient or outpatient jobs. So that is it, they Require (not Prefer) 1 year experience. It makes no sense why they use the word Prefer, have people spend time filling out each app and then at the end state in a pop up box message: "Sorry you do not qualify. Your application will not be forwarded to HR." We just gave up on NYP and eventually got hospital jobs elsewhere.

Hi guys i came across this post as I am going through an interview process as we speak - I applied to MANY jobs saying 1 year preferred - but put on the application process 6mo- 1 yr because i got my first job last oct 2014 and only had 10/11 months experience. I got rejected from every position automatically BUT I thought you should all know, I was still contacted my an NYP talent specialist whom talked about my interests/ etc, and was placed to go to an invite only interview event for experienced nurses. This woman said that she still thought I deserved a chance and I was so close to a year that it did not matter. So, in my opinion I think it is worth it to apply even if you automatically get rejected because she was aware of my rejections.

I interviewed at that event too with less than a years experience! I graduated last summer and started working on a telemetry unit. I was just wondering if you got an offer for the department you interviewed for or an offer for another interview?

I got a job offer for the position I interviewed for at the event!

Congrats PomPomLady!

I've had two interviews so far, one during the experienced RN event and then another last week at a different department. I did not get the position that I originally interviewed for, but the talent acquisition team asked if I was interested in another department and I said Yes! I am currently waiting for them to get back to me. I was just wondering how long it took for you to hear back from them? Also, in your NYP career portal did the status change at all? Mine still says "Under Review."

I have not even checked to be honest if the status changed! It took them 3 days to get back to me. Apparently I'm supposed to start next week though- onboarding is taking very long I told them I needed two weeks notice for my other job .... And they still haven't gotten back ... I may have to ask to start at a later date :-/ did not want to give my notice without the official offer.

I see. I know that there are two upcoming employee orientations on Nov. 9 and Dec. 7. Orientation for the floor itself will be about 10-12 weeks, more if needed. Well, I hope you get to start on your original date! If not, and if I get this job (fingers crossed), we might cross paths at the later one in December. Congrats again!!!!
