Accepted employment offer...am I bound to this job?

I recently accepted a position at a new ED and have filled out and sent in the paperwork, but will not start orientation until next month. I wanted to resign in my current place of employment due to a physician that enjoys threatening licenses among other things, but this is a complete other story.

The meat and potatoes here is that I am currently studying to be a psychiatric nurse practitioner, and today after I submitted my paperwork accepting employment, I received an email from the inpatient psych unit in my hospital offering me a PRN position until another full-time nurse resigns in October.

I'm now extremely torn. The psych unit is where I really want to be, but I don't want to say no to this other job now that I've already accepted this other position. Any advice?

What does prn mean? How many shifts/hours per month? What is the October nurse ends up staying?

At my facility, PRN is at least 5 shifts per month with one weekend with more available as bonus shifts if they are available. While PRN does not receive PTO or insurance, they receive about a $10/hr bump in pay and you can kind of set your own schedule. The October nurse will not be staying as she has already notified the director of her intent to retire.

I've seen people change their minds about retiring ... Don't count on anything like that until it actually happens.

Would your schedule at the job you accepted already allow you to pick up prn hours at the psych unit position? Why not do both for now? Especially as there really is no guarantee that the full time psych job is that is expected to open in October is yours. If October comes around and you are offered the full time psych position, then you will have some decisions to make.

I would do both for now just to be safe
