I am a new grad who is able to get a job at a surgery center almost guaranteed due to the people that I know but I really wanted to work in a hospital in the ER or a step down unit. I don't really see myself as an OR nurse. Should I take the job since I am a new gad and it is difficult to find jobs or should i be patient until I get what I want?

Specializes in school nurse.

You can get some decent experience, and let's face it, a paycheck. An outpatient surgery position wouldn't preclude you from working inpatient at a later time.

Go for it!

Specializes in Medsurg/ICU, Mental Health, Home Health.

Where I would live would adore you - the stepdown units often need people and love new grads, but everyone wants to work somewhere else.

Specializes in Oncology.

ER is very hard to get as a new grad. Step down is usually readily available. Step downs are also often difficult units to work.

Specializes in NICU, ER, OR.

NO!! The OR is a whole different universe, one you have no exposure to, if you do it's a day, in nursing school .... it's completely opposite of what you think a nurse does... so if in any way you allready know you don't like it--- stay away, don't waste your time!!
