Accepatnce letter to NS with a catch?!

Nursing Students General Students

Published

Just got my acceptance letter from my nursing program YAY!!!! (To start Jan '14)

But, there seems to be a catch. At the time of registration we are all required to take an additional Math entrance exam :/ and the minimum score has to be 90% :o in order to still be considered a nursing student.

I'm happy as heck but a bit worried about this math exam.

Has anybody ever heard of this?!

We lose a few now and then for poor math skills. We have limited spaces in the program, and those who can't hack the math and fail out, have used up a space that someone else may have benefited from.

I teach med calc, and although basic algebra is required for entry to the program, there are always a few who really struggle. I would recommend brushing up on basic algebra, solving for x, with ratio: proportion, and the simple dimensional analysis formula (canceling units).

Simple dimensional analysis! Ha! Not for me. I can't seem to grasp it when it comes to nursing math. Ratio proportion I get. DA..... not so much.

I didn't have to take a math test until a few weeks into my first semester. We had to get a 90% or better and we had two tries. After that, calculations were routinely put into all of our exams. I am a person who fears math. But I was able to learn the calculations and do just fine. Practice is my best friend. The more you practice the different kinds of calculations you need to do, the easier it gets. One thing I learned is not to rush through math problems. I take it slowly and go step by step, being very sure to read and understand the problem. (Nothing like getting a question wrong because it asked what the total amount was for the day and you figure out a single dose!) Good luck on your test. You will most likely look back on this and smile because you will become quite good at your calculations.

So this is a normal thing? Are any of you students at a CA university? I'm really glad I ran across this thread..

Normal thing? I'm not sure because I'm just staring in January. Since it's a test I'll be taking during orientation I'm thinking it's a basic math skills test.
