Accelerated nursing programs in Fall 2009

Published

Does anyone know of any accelerated nursing programs that start in Fall 2009? I'm also limited to schools that only require the following prereqs: anatomy, physiology, general chem and lab, psychology (developmental, etc. i was a psych major), statistics, nutrition, and microbiology.

Yep, I turned my application in during the last week of October...now I'm just waiting to find out. I applied under the early decision option, so at least I'll have an answer by December 15!

Where else did you apply? I only want to go to Hopkins, so it is the only school I applied to. Maybe not the smartest move on my part, but we'll see....

Good luck!

I wanted to do that also, but I didn't know I could even apply till the last week of October and there was no way I could get recommendations and transcripts in one week. I wasn't going to finish microbio till end of May and school starts the week after, but apparently they said that was okay. Now I have everything so I should be able to send everything in by this Saturday.

I'm not applying to anything till Mar. That's when NYU and U. of Maryland apps are due. I had a friend who also just applied to Hopkins and she got in so hopefully that'll happen to us. Good luck and let me know if you get in. Thats only a month away!

That's great! One ethnics class is doable...compared to several other schools. Maybe i'll take it this summer and apply for the spring. Thanks for the info!

Hey Serasarah,

Your friend that applied to Hopkins and got in--was that recently? I'm just wondering if they have already started notifying people for next year..

What were her stats (you know, GPA, etc).

I'm curious to know too, but this was two years ago and I lost contact with her. I usually talked to her over facebook, but her profile was gone too. It's pretty competitive out there so it would be nice to know what they're looking for. Where did you get your bachelors?

I got my bachelor's in economics from USF (a long time ago). I also went to culinary school, and have been working as a pastry chef instructor at a culinary school (teaching and writing baking textbooks). Who knows if Hopkins will like the idea of a transition from pastry chef to nurse...on a positive note, I can contribute well to their bake sale efforts (should have mentioned that in my application!).

Too bad that you lost contact with your Hopkins friend--she could have provided a lot of very helpful information.

Good luck to you, too! I'll keep you posted...

If it helps, she and I went to UCSD and she was a sociology major. I remember running into her a lot at a local community college where she was taking prereqs. Oddly enough, our school didn't offer physio and anatomy even though it was medically orientated. I don't know if she did any extracurricular, but I know she played lacrosse with me for two years. Why did you choose to do the traditional program? I was thinking to do that as well, but it seems to be significantly more expensive.

Actually, the traditional program is about the same cost as the accelerated. Traditional is $30k per year (approx), for 2 years. Accel is $57k (approx) for the program. JHU has said they are priced the same, but accel is faster.

My original plan was to apply for the accelerated program, but when I started realizing how much Hopkins had to offer, I realized that I wanted to be able to take advantage of everything they have. I also really want to participate in a summer program (work at JHH for the summer, and possibly through my 2nd year--I think if you do that then they have half-tuition reimbursement, too). I want to get a really great job after graduation, and I think having time to work at JHH will give me a more competitive edge when it comes to hiring into competitive new grad programs. Also, I really didn't feel like I wanted to give up my life completely for a year. I was prepared to do it, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized I will be happier in the traditional program.

Hmm thanks for the info about the tuition. That does make me want to apply for the traditional. I wouldn't finish micro till end of May and it would be too much of a rush to move from California to Baltimore within a week. I guess I still have till Saturday to decide.

I just graduated with a bachelors in psychology from UCSD and I actually knew I wanted to be a nurse since my second year. But I loved UCSD too much to transfer which I kinda regret now because this process is such a hassle. Especially the prereqs. I might just follow your footsteps and do the classes online. I volunteered a couple of times and went to Honduras in March for a medical brigade and after that experience, I knew that I had to be a nurse.

How did you decide to go from a pastry chef to a nurse? That's a very interesting transition.

Regarding the tuition, I took that into consideration when I made my decision. If accelerated is going to cost the same amount, I might as well spend more time and do traditional. Also, I have heard that the hospital has a program where if you work through the summer and 20 hours per week (in your second year), that they will pay 1/2 of your senior year tuition. So, traditional might actually save money. Of course, it is a longer period of time that you are in school and not earning money...

The decision to leave pastry and enter nursing was actually a fairly easy decision. My mom has cancer, and I spent a LOT of hours in the hospital with her, especially in the ICU, where I spent a lot of time talking to her nurses. After that experience, I felt like I needed more of a challenge, I wanted to focus more on health and helping people, and to be honest, my butt got a little too big from eating cheesecake every day!

How did you know so early that you wanted to be a nurse?

Hi SFChef and serasarah18! I'm supposed to be studying for a quiz on the bones of the skull (!), but I needed a little distraction!

It's been great to read your stories. Like you, serasarah18, I've known since early on in my undergraduate career that I wanted to be a nurse; I just really liked what I was doing (Liberal Arts/lots of Philosophy, Theology, Literature, Science & Math)! I graduated last spring, and I've been taking prereq's (Micro, A&P, Nutrition, Psych) ever since. After this semester, I only have to take is A&P 2, and I'll be all set! Well, I guess Catholic University wants Organic Chem, but I haven't decided if I want to apply there yet.

I've been volunteering and working while taking my classes, but I can't quite distract myself from the "pain" of waiting; I just want to know already! I have one deadline Dec 1 (VCU in Richmond, VA), but the rest are all in Feb & March, so hopefully, I won't have to do another application after the end of this month!

SFChef: you make some really good points about applying to the Trad vs. Acc'l program; if I don't get into the Acc'l, I'll definately ask Admissions to consider me for Traditional.

It's so nice to "talk" to other people going through the same darn process!

JohnnyNurse, it's great to hear from other people who want to go Hopkins and are going crazy waiting! At least you've applied to other schools, so you have a built-in back up plan. I probably should have done that...

Good luck to you in your applications. If all goes well, maybe we can all meet up for a study session at JHU!
