Accelerated Nursing Program?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hey all,

I am a current senior (21 yr. old) attending Quinnipiac University in CT. I was in the nursing program at this school after I transferred from UConn my sophomore year. Unfortunately, a family tragedy arose and I dropped out of the program because I was unable to make the 4 year completion mark for my bachelors. Fortunately I left on very good terms. I am about to graduate with a degree in Health Science Studies and want to enroll in an accelerated nursing program and was wondering if anyone has had any experience with that? I have been an EMT-I for quite some time, have a phlebotomy certification (although I do not necessarily use it) and have volunteered in Dharamsala, India and Chiang Mai, Thailand. My current GPA is about a 3.4 and was wondering if this is competitive enough to get accepted along with my few credentials? My dream was to become a Combat Nurse/Medic right after college and serve America before I could come back (hopefully) and begin my masters to become a Nurse Anesthetist. Hopefully I didn't "royally screw" myself over because of an unexpected tragedy that kind of veered me off track from pursuing my goals. Thanks for any input.

It seems like you're on the right track and the accelerated BSN program is the way to go, especially if you want to pursue a nurse anesthetist degree eventually. I just graduated from a 12 month accelerated BSN program in NY. The program and schedule is intense, but if you're committed you'll suceed. Your grades seems to be right on point and previous experience and credentials don't matter. My advice is to start researching programs and applying now. Every program has different pre-req class requirements, you'll want to make sure you have all them or can schedule them in before you graduate. Some of my classmates were in your position, graduated early May with their first bachelors degree and then started the ABSN program two weeks later. Good Luck! :)

I did a 12 month accelerated program. LOVED it. good luck

thanks alot for the support, I'm just really nervous about the whole re-applying to the program thing. Feels like I'm back in freshman year haha.

you mentioned wanting to be a combat nurse. you should look for a school that offers nursing rotc. they will pay for the degree and give you a stipend every month. you would also be able to get your masters level course work paid for since nurses are in high demand in the military. good luck with finishing up that last year! :D

THAT'S WHAT I WANTED TO DO so so bad, I heard ROTC is only for entering freshman though who are planning to go a full 4 years. I would only be going for a solid year from May to May. I don't think I'm able to do that.

im in alabama so im not sure if its different here but they offer an rotc scholarship at the school im applying to for 1-4 yrs and you can go into officers training as long as you make a commitment to the army of 6 years i think... i looked at it because i also want to apply to the acc bsn program.

talk to a recruiter about it or look on the army website to research which schools offer the program and what the length of the scholarship and commitment is. good luck

Nursing schools are very competitive as you already know. Your gpa is decent. Down here in FL, we have people who are straight A students and still don't get it b/c of the super long waiting lists. However, all of that volunteer experience and the fact that you're an EMT can only work in your favor. Plus, you have a bachelor's already in health science. I don't see any reason why you wouldn't be accepted into a nursing program. Good luck.:)
