Accelerated BSN programs in NYC

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I am a 1999 graduate of St. Michael's College in Vermont with a BS in Biology. I've been working for 4 years in NYC at a pharmceutical advertising agency. I would like a change of careers, specifically I am looking to pursue a career as a nurse practicioner in pediactrics (oncology). Hoping to get some assistance from you experienced and knowledgeable folks about schools in NYC that are not that expensive and where I would be able to do the accelerated BSN on a part time basis, mainly evenings and weekends.

I would also like to know, if the 3.0 GPA these programs request are ever waived. I graduated with a 2.8 and would really love to enter a BSN program. Thank you very much!! Also, what is the timeframe needed to complete the MS degree in nurse practioner after completion of a BSN? I'm hearing 4 years?!? That seems too long..

Any advice and/or information, contacts would be greatly appreciated! Thanks again.

accelerated and part-time are kind of contradictory. the true accelerated programs are full time and then some. some require you have no other commitments while in the program (like working).

again, probably not going to happen, at least not in an accelerated program. their admission process is very competitive. but i wouldn't give up completely. there are plenty of bsn programs that you could get into, on a part time basis. depending on what sciences you have, i'm guessing it will take you at least 2 yrs part time (if you throw in summer classes). are you in manhattan? how far can you travel?

if you're talking part time, you're looking at at least 3 years. you need to complete 500+ hours of practical to become an np. i don't know too many people that do it in less time. i'm in a msn in nursing education program now. it will have taken me 3 1/2 years by the time i finish, and i only have to do 90 practical hours.

pm me if you need any more info. i'm in ny and know a lot of the schools out here.
