ABSN Duke Fall 2010

U.S.A. North Carolina

Published

Hi All!

I have decided to take the plunge and leave my career as a mental health therapist to gain a BSN in Nursing and hopefully move straight into MSN program. Is anyone else applying to Duke in the Fall??:yeah:

Jason, Your reasons are not at all petty! In fact, I've come to some of the same conclusions as you.

As an AE, my focus was client service. Working with clients, earning their trust and fighting the good fight has always been my strength, and I see it translating well into nursing. I do know what you mean about making people's lives better (if only fleetingly). That was the exact same experience I had with my baking business. So many smiles!

After my husband passed, there was no way I could go back to advertising. It's a great field, but it requires an incredible sense of urgency. Having dealt with true life and death issues, I was no longer able to muster that same sense of importance for a print ad. On the other hand, I will always be willing to bake. To me, it's a truly basic form of human care and comfort, not dissimilar from nursing in that respect at all.

Basically, I see the same connection that you do, and it's no little thing.

Honestly, I don't think any of us should waste our time comparing motivations and stats. We're all completely different and we all have great things to offer. If you have the passion and commitment, that's all you need! So, f you can see a future for yourself in healthcare, then I think you are most definitely on the right track!

True, it's a waste of time trying to compare our vitals, as it were.

It IS nice, though, to finally feel challenged and motivated by other students' experiences.

Not to knock NCCU too much, but I never really felt like I had real peers there. So, thanks for being motivated, experienced, and accomplished, everyone!

It also occurred to me (my fiancee actually brought it up while we were talking about THE NAIL-BITING FEAR of all this) that we here on this board are probably in the upper 10% of applicants, or at least the more computer-savvy 20%. Subjective, perhaps, but at least we're all seeking first-hand information and perspectives. So good for us.

Hey Jason...

Funny you mentioned that those of us on the forum are probably some of the more savy applicants. I was thinking the excat same thing.

Hello all-

I recently applied to Duke ABSN (and also a masters program in Minnesota). I have a BA in Anthropology. After college I moved from the Midwest to NYC where I worked in fashion. My mom died in 2007 which was the major catalyst for me going into health care, something I always aspired to do. I really would love to go to Duke, however my boyfriend hates Blue Devil basketball fans so we might need to work on that.

I'm hoping you guys are the upper 10% because if everyone has a background like all of you, then I might be in trouble.

I totally understand, and I hope you know that I wasn't being critical when I said we shouldn't compare motivations. Your question was a great way for us to get to know our (hopefully) future classmates. I just hated to think you or anyone else was feeling insecure based on this thread. It is, after all, a happy place! ;) I was worried for no reason and I am very glad I was wrong!

Hi mld1980! Welcome to the thread. :yeah: I've got the ART and SCIENCE thing going too...

Question... just received one of my outstanding prereq grades!!! YAY! Am I correct in thinking that an email should be sent to "A CERTAIN SOMEONE" directly from the professor?

On a personal note: after my last final in THREE DAYS... I will no longer be buring the candle on both ends (work + school). Can't wait to have a tiny bit of a life again. (gotta love the dancing man)

Geneva:

Yes, I would have them email "her" and copy you on the message. Then call "her" to see if "she" got it. Good luck on your last final!!!!

I'm not so sure I'd call it dancing, as much as staggering. HOWEVER, it does kinda look like me when I'm dancing.

Hi GenevaMarie! What I was told to do was to have my professors send an email for each class that was still in progress at the Duke deadline. That way they could be considered by the admission's committee. So my emails were sent on Monday with finals still to be taken. Then, when the semester if officially over I am supposed to send in a final transcript. My file will likely have been reviewed by then, but I guess they need it for their records.

I know the deadline has past, but they seem pretty flexible about it and I am sure they would still accept your emails. Good luck with finals!

Oooh, Carolina11 makes a very good point! Definitely have them copy you, because they will send a "reply all" with a thank you, and then you know she received it. I forgot to tell one of my professors to copy me, and it got confusing...

Hi All,

Just wanted to drop in and say I've been reading this thread for quite some time, but never posted, so I thought I should say hi to all the people I've been "stalking" online. I'm applying to Duke as well, and I was very excited to read about all the past experiences. Sounds like the there will be some really great and interesting folks in the 2010 start class. I hope to be there with you all! Duke sounds fantastic, and would be a welcomed change for this California kid. Hope you all have a Happy Friday and a great weekend, and hopefully we'll all be hearing some good news from Duke in the near future.

Oops. Does anyone know if it's possible to edit or delete a post? I just realized I mentioned someone's name in my last post. Silly me. I don't want us to get in trouble again, but I can't figure out how to fix it :imbar

Thanks!

Welcome atoma! You might as well join in and enjoy the next couple of weeks with us as we all anxiously await contact...So you're looking to move to NC from Cali? Good luck and let us know when you hear something!
