About RN license renewal

U.S.A. Virginia

Hey all,

I am wondering if anyone can offer information regarding RN license renewal. I took the NCLEX last year and got my license but have not been able to find any jobs in this field. My license is valid for 1 more year. This means that if I don't find an RN position within the year and start working I'll have to go back and re-take the NCLEX. My question is this: once hired, what kind of training or continued education hours would one have to do to make sure that RN license stays valid? Is there a certain amount of hours that must be completed?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! :clown:

Virginia does not require CE hours.

Virginia does not require CE hours.

That means that once the license expires you HAVE to renew by retaking the NCLEX?

Wait, I'm confused ... why would you have to retake the NCLEX at all?

Well because its only valid for a certain time period (about 2 years). Don't you have to be working in the field to file for renewal? I'm confused because I keep hearing new things about this from different people.

No, you don't have to be working. You'll get renewal info in the mail, and can renew online. I think the fee is $90. Just be sure you renew before you expire. There is no reason for you to take the NCLEX ever again. When you hear "stories," your best bet is to check the BON website: Virginia Board of Nursing -- if you don't find your answer, there is contact information on the site so you can speak to someone in person.

Thank you for your input. Appreciate your prompt response :)

Yes, check with your BON. You should receive a renewal form in the mail when

your renewal is due. In Massachusetts, ours expires on our birth date on an every 2 year rotation.

Place your expiration date in your Google calender and regular calender. I am also licensed in

another disipline (not nursing) and did not receive a renewal form this year. Called the Board and they

sent one out in a few days. So make it your responsibility to know when you should receive the

renewal form and when the license payment is due.

In Ma, they require 15 contact units in each renewal period. If your

state does not requre CEUS, be aware this may change so bookmark

your BON website to keep updated.

Good luck with your job search and congratulations on passing the NCLEX!:nurse:

actually in MA. depending on what yr you graduate and take your boards is when you have to renew ( I'm only talking about the first time renewal-not the rest of your life). I had this discussing with the MA. board last month. If you are an LPN who graduated and took the boards in an even yr ( 2010) you will have to renew your license in 2011 and pay the full price. The same thing will be true for RN graduating and taking the boards in 2011. You will have to renew at full price your license in 2012. I was shocked that my daugter who took and passed the LPN boards in July will have to pay to renew at full price in Jan. The board said it has always been like this. I look back since I've a nurse for 21 yrs and in happens that I took my boards in and odd yr and then did not have to pay until the next odd yrs.

You definitely do not have to retake the NCLEX again if you have a job or not and it depends on the state you are in as to rather or not you have CEUs like here in Florida we have to have 26 CEU hrs---good luck

Hey,

Don't be worried. You don't have to retake your NCLEX to renew your license. Just call your BON and ask them what all is required from you to renew your license. If not, just google your BON and go to the website and check under the heading RN license renwal. Take care.
