About dorsogluteal injection, if it only hit SC ( not muscle) is it will harm?
i'm scared if my injecton will hit the superior gluteal artery, actually where's the location of this thing? at which quadran of the buttock?
This is the reason why we always draw back before injected the med, to make sure we are not in a vein or artery causing the med to be absorbed faster than desired.
http://www.mentalhealth.com/drug/p30-m03.html#Head_5 Please note this is not a drug book, PDR or official site, but it is easy to read and understand (to me at least.) Always check before you give any medication you are unsure of.
Dosage
Fluphenazine decanoate is given i.m. preferably in the gluteus maximus, or s.c. It is not for i.v. use.
At first I didn't recognise the med. I knew it as Prolixin.

first, it is recommended that im's not be given in the dorsogluteal.
as far as, when do we "know" we hit muscle -- we don't! we use landmarks, techniques, tools, and feel to identify the location of specific muscle tissue. we aim -- and hopefully the depth of the needle makes it to the muscle -- but research has revealed that many of our intended im injections end up in sq tissue! need to use appropriate length needle to penetrate the fat pad (the depth of the sq tissue) -- and most needles (1 1/2 inch) are not long enough to penetrate sq on many of our obese patients.
