Sounds like a dreadful situation. Unfortunately it might not always be possible to grant your request not to work with this person. I hope you find a solution soon.

When she finally gets around to working does she do a good job?

Boy, do I hear you, but like Tweety said it might not always be possible to keep her away from you. On my evenings on there's a pct who is absolutely amazing, does whatever she's asked without b*ing about it, and makes my job easier (which is, frankly, HER job). Then there's another two who behave as though the slightest request is too much, any call light that goes off is an inconvenience to their chatty time, and "why can't you do it?" is the refrain of the day. What can I do about it? Not a danged thing. We're short on techs and they're here long-term, so guess what: I have to deal with it. They are assigned to the floor, maybe to one side or the other but it doesn't matter, we must deal with each other.

Same for nights: a couple are real angels to work with, a true pleasure, and one is a nightmare. I do my best to avoid the nightmare but it's inevitable.

I hope for your sake that you CAN avoid this tech, but be prepared for the possibility that you simply can't and still stay in your current position. And remember, if you do decide to go to another unit, you have an equal chance of finding another one just like her (or, horrors, she gets floated to your new unit!).

There's good techs, great techs, and horrible techs. C'est la vie!

Fortunately, on this shift I can avoid her. We are assigned a PCA every day, there are 2 on this shift everyday. I can request the other one. And since one of the Charge nurses will change the assignment when he doesn't want a particular PCA, I don't see the problem!!! With the other charge nurses (who is our team leader) she will change, besides she has heard my mouth abouth this person already.

And Baptized_by_fire...The manager is aware of this problem (by me and others). I have put in for a transfer to the day shift for many reasons and this is one of them.

Ariesbsn, yes she does a good job. But its not when she gets around to it...its IF she gets around to it. She has found favor with the male charge nurse and so he is absolutely no help! But like I said before, if he can make the changes to suit him...he can make the changes to suit me.

I have done her job. I know it can be back-breaking and time consuming. I try to help my PCA's when I can because I know the horrors of a "Do this, Do that" nurse. And the rest understand if I can't that they have to step up, and they don't give me grief!!! She, on the other hand, seems to think the world revolves around her and she picks and chooses who she will work for and how much she is willing to do. I cannot do like others and continue to do someone else's job, and mine too. If that were the case, why do we need PCA's??/ (that is kind of retorical)

That really is the pits. What does the manager say about it? We don't have a PCA in our ICU. I'd be gob-smacked if I tried to delegate something and got lip.
