A problem a newly and worried graduate is facing

Published

Hi~~

I just finished my CPRNE in January. The result can be another 2 more weeks far from now. However, I have been submitting my resume via HFO and hospital/LTC itself, but with no call for interview whatsoever. I am thinking if it was just me or it is always a transition that you guys had experienced.

Despite resume issue, could it be because I havent been recognized as RPN yet, so that they are not considering my qualification?

If that holds, could you, experienced ones, shed me a light of what I can do in the meantime? I dont want to waste my waiting-for-result time. ANY SUGGESTION?

THANK YOU SO MUCH, EVERYONE!!

February and March are the months that nursing career fairs are held at Ontario universities. It could be that the places you have applied to are waiting until the career fairs are completed before they commence interviews. Most HR's take a few weeks to process applications at the best of times, so I imagine it will take even longer at this time. If you are looking for work in the Toronto area you can attend a job fair at Ryerson on Feb 27/10 see website for registration details http://www.nurses4ontario.com/Events.html

good luck in your job search

It may vary from one employer to the next. I applied for and got a job before I had even written the exam.

Sorry I have no advice on what to do in the mean time.I was working at my old job while I waited.Congratulations on finishing school and best of luck with the job hunt.

Thank you so much for your input!!

that is very helpful ^_^

Guess patience is the key for now.

Are you sure that the places that you applied to are actually still offering employment through HFO, some hospitals are cutting jobs right now and some are not. I would consider giving them a call and see if they are offering jobs through HFO. If not, keep applying elsewhere.

Also I would follow the advice of the poster, Dishes, it is great advice. In addition, get out there and network, call some of your classmates and see if they know of anywhere that is hiring. It really helps to know someone in this tough market.

Some people in my class worked as health care aides during school and that helped them get into nursing jobs. You will find something, it just may take some time.

Good luck.

hi~~

thank you so much, everyone!!

hi mutoc,

you are not alone, i too have been on the hfo site, to no avail. i have been applying since january with no call backs, emails or anything!

so, as dishes suggested i am trying to network. only one of my co-grads managed to get a job (2 jobs), and the rest of us are diligently looking.

the results for the cpnre have been sent out ! i received my results on friday the 19th. :hpygrp:i passed !:anpom::dancgrp::anpom:

you should receive your result soon also, if you haven't already received it.

good luck

maybe see you at the fair at ryerson! (thanks again dishes !)

trulibra, congratulations on passing the cprne exam!

mutoc, I hope you will be hearing the same good news soon.

It is an employers market, so try to spend some time preparing before you go to the job fair. Find out what is unique about each of the exhibitors by clicking on their websites and reviewing the employer's mission, vision and strategic goals. Based on this information, write a cover letter that describes how you will be a good fit to their organization. Describe any experiences that show you have a good understanding of their unique patient population. Also, if you did clinical placement with any of these employers, network with your past preceptor, let them know that you enjoyed your clincal experience and you are looking for work at their facility and ask if you can use their name as a reference.

good luck

If a final placement went well, the preceptor gives the student permission to use their name as a reference. Often the unit manager will as well.

By the end of the final placement, the student is in a position to know if there are vacancies within the organization and is usually given an application if everyone likes each other.

I realize that every graduating class faces different hurdles finding employment but when times are tight, all you can do is apply and wait for a response.

When I graduated it took me two months to find a job and it wasn't a job that I really wanted. But those student loans had to be repaid. Three casual positions and a lot of weekend and evening shifts until the job market opened up again.

It is a tough market right now, but for those that just passed the CPNRE, congrats and it may be easier once an employer sees that you have passed your exam.

Best wishes.
