A Pre-Nursing Students Dilema... Getting the RN Job After Graduation

Love this site and all of the wonderful advice and topics covered! And after reading and researching the RN job situation nationwide (I happen to reside in good ol' California ), my question is....

Seeing as the jobs are short and scarce, would getting a CNA certification and working as a CNA during nursing school (2 more classes and FINALLY I will be able to apply to my local nursing program at VVC!) qualify as the much needed "nursing experience" after graduating with an ADN and passing the NCLEX?

I know that working at the same time as going through the nursing program could be difficult. But ... if it is what needs to be done in todays economy, then I'm willing to sacrifice a little sleep. ;)

Thanks all! I'm eager to become a part of & jump into this lovely nursing network!

No it does not count as nursing experience, but it may help you network and possibly wherever you work will offer you an RN position when you do graduate.

CNAs are not nurses so no it wouldn't count. But it will be good experience. Good luck.

Boo. Too bad. Though, the experience would be great, and to get out there and actually get my hands dirty (in many ways...har har)! Thanks guys!

Being a PCA or PCT (which ever term the hospital uses) will help to get your foot in the door, you will at least be an employee.

I went to a hospital based program and all of the girls that were patient techs in the hospital and in school with me got jobs immediately after opening on the unit they were working one. The girl I shadowed in the MICU got a job there right after graduation while she was a tech there during school. Though I would not recommend working while in school if you are going full time or fast track, I will say that if being on the floor doesn't get you a job it will certainly make you more comfortable when you do get a job. I work with some girls who are in nursing schools and when something interesting comes up I always bring them along and they do appreciate the experience.
