A Nursing Shortage?

Published

With the economy in peril it seems that the nursing shortage may be turning into a nursing glut. Some of the local nurses that were looking to work part-time or retire are happy to grab every shift they can. Is the job market still out there in other geographic areas, or has it dried up nationally?

RBEZEMEK , I quess you are referring to my post ( #3 ),I think you misunderstood me . I was posing a rhetorical question ,because as I asked are we in a shortage or glut of nurses ? I can't fathom which it is . Depending upon the local situation you will hear in one place there is a shortage of nurses whilst in another there is a glut . I was trying to make this point to the OP.

I also offered some of the possible reasons why there is a shortage of nurses in some areas . Yet in other areas , managment tell the staff there is a surplus of nurses . You obviously are lucky in that there are job postings related to available posts .Others are lucky because their location attracts staff

Thanks, Actually my husband and I bought property in the hill country a couple of years ago and plan to relocate there sooner or later. (We are currently in Idaho) Do you know what the job market is around Austin?

Hospitals in the Minneapolis area are not hiring much, but Long Term Care facilities hire new grads.

A good way to check out nursing homes is to volunteer at several-see if the care seems good and ask the staff if they like the working conditions.

STACCIEMCCOMAS,

What's the job market like in Idaho?

I was in Boise a few years ago and loved it.

Boise is a great town, but I hear that one of the two large hospitals has actually laid off nurses recently. They had support and admin staff lay offs last year, but recently direct patient care was hit too. I am not certain about the other major hospital, but I will inquire.
