A little worried...

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello everyone,

I'm currently enrolled in a Community College located in NYC and majoring in Nursing.

Our Nursing program is highly competitive when it comes to admittance into the clinical phase of Nursing, as they evaluate the students GPA (minimum 3.0) from the pre-clinicals which include :English I,Sociology,Psychology, and A&P I ,as well as the Pre entrance exam ,which im eligible to take after i have finished those four classes.

I'm still a freshman and the only classes that i am taking right now are: English I and Sociology. The English class is fairly easy and my professor told me that i will probably get an A for the semester , but... here's whats driving me insane. I am nowhere near acing my sociology class, so far i had to write 2 research papers from a total of 4 . One has received a 7.5 out of 10 while the other only a 7/10. I don't know why but i never seem to deliver what my professor is looking for in his assigned research papers:uhoh3:

It's driving me nuts, i really want to do well and get at least a B but if i continue I'll probably end up with a C to C+...

I hope ill do better next semester with Psychology and A&P I but i heard it's very tough material... and supposedly when its time to Pick students for the Clinical phase , eligible students are being chosen from 4.0 GPA (RN-PAX exam scores )down... until about 200 or so eligible students.

I dont know what i should do... i really feel like i don't have the smarts to being a nurse in a competitive program with with about 1000'ish+ Pre-clinical nursing students.

Does your school have a weighted criteria sheet? Look and see the point differences between an A/B/C. Thats how my school admits ppl into nursing. If you make one C it won't ruin your chances. Remember you can retake classes. I had a C in Anatomy and a C in Micro. I retook Anatomy and got and A but still got accepted with a C in Micro. Don't give up. If nursing is what you really want to do stick with it. I had to wait a semester out of school waiting to be accepted. I graduate next month. You can do it!

Thank you for the encouragement :D

i forgot to mention, repeating a pre-clinical is out of the question, they will only accept the first grade attained.:o

oh and we do have pt. differences in our grades A would be 4.00 A- 3.70 B+ 3.30 ...etc

Right off the bat, my suggestion would be to go to your Sociology instructor and ask for some feedback. What can you improve on? What kind of comments did you get on your completed assignments? Ask them to explain something you don't quite understand. A lot of times, your concern/interest in doing better in their course will go a long ways towards how they view you. (They probably have hundreds of students...with very little personal interaction with any of them.) Stand out! Be proactive...this is your education/your future career...fight for it....you're responsible for doing the best you can. Why wouldn't you seek out help if you knew you could and had to do better? Don't wait either! Good luck!!

wow that was really inspirational :yeah:

Yes i do try to stand out in my class as an active participator during class discussions, so far his comments regarding the grade of my papers seemed a little unreasonable, but i do not want to seem too forward and disrespectful by arguing. A lot of students have tried it and failed.

Thankfully there seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel. During our latest Research discussion he told me that i was 'on the right track'.:specs: For Paper # 3

Taaz...that's great news! Glad to hear you're on the right track.

No, I don't recommend being argumentative or disrespectful, but approach them with a lot of "I don't think I'm..." or "I'm unsure what..." kind of questions. Always be humble and use lots of please and thank you's. Good luck with the rest of your journey!
