What's up peeps...

Mikey boy here...

Myself?

An Intenational Student, Chinese (Minority), Love Healthcare and helping people and wanna make it big in the states.

I'm starting my Pre Nursing Courses in UAB pretty soon in Spring 2006.

My family from Malaysia will be migrating to U.S next year, so I guess I'll be studying there.

I just want to know if anyone could help me out on NURSING in the U.S. i'LL BE ON AN F-1 Visa and I'll spending about three years there to complete the BSN and RN NCLEX Exam.

There are some doubts about doing Nursing though because my second option would be doin' Medical Technology.

I'm worried about the stigma on minorities as nurses and I'm a guy so it would be very different.

I need your advice on doing Nursing major as an International Students in the U.S.

What's the oppurtunities like for International students in getting jobs after graduation in the U.S?

Will it be easy to get a job after graduating with a BSN in Alabama?

Thans and hope for anyone's reply A.S.A.P!

Dear Suzanne....

Michael here once again

I'm glad you're online right now...Its 9.30 pm here in Malaysia.

As I was just asking a few minutes ago...

I'm really interested in working in the U.S as a nurse since my family is migrating to the U.S soon. My sis is currently living in Florida.

The problem is I'm clueless about the matter of getting the job in the U.S. When I apply will I need a sponsor (like a employer) to sponsor me a grren card prior working as a nurse?

Will it be hard to obtain one since I'm an International Fresh graduate?

Mike

Any International Students you know that got the green card after 1 year of OPT Trainning?

I heard from my friends saying that it would be hard to get the hospital (employer) to petition a green card for an international student (fresh grad) in a short period of time, is this true?

Do you think there might have a big posibility that International student could get the green card?

Thx for your time...hope I didn't take your time...I'm sorry

Thx

You know Mike, I live in Chicago and, here, you would do well as an international nursing student. We have many different cultures here. Chinese, filipino, many different Asian people. A male nursing student would be taken well around here as that is not unusual. Many of the male nurses go one to be managers and business like people in healthcare. So, you have a good chance, I think. Welcome to the US. By the way, Alabama is beautiful. Mary

Mike,

I think ur recent priority is make sure u get high GPA to get into a nursing program. U can claim ur major as nursing, but there's no guarantee u can be admitted to the nursing program at ur school. U have to compete with other smart students. Also, when u r in a nursing program, u still have to work very hard to make through it. I don't know how good ur English is. But I want to tell u that u NEED to have very good communication skills to be a good nurse, as u need to do teaching to family and patients, communicate with different health professionals, nurses and MDs. Your english skills sometimes would be critical in emergency situations. My TOFEL is 630, and I got 6/6 for the writing part, but I still have to work much harder than my other American classmates. I'll suggest u to focus on how u can get into the nursing program first, which is ur very first priority right now. U can then start thinking about the green card when u r almost done. U know what, immigration policies change all the time. What applies now might not be the same after 3 to 4 years later. U just never know. I'll not trying to disencourage u, I just want to remind u that there are so many things we have to take care of before we can have the "qualification" to think about green card. Good luck for ur study.

BTW, I'm a Chinese too.

I second Evepooh, she has good points. Worry about GPA, communication skills and everything will fall into place. Nursing program is very challenging. Even english speaking students have hard time. You have 3 years to worry about working and green card. We (international student) work very hard and most of us made it. You will be fine too in Alabama. I am in Georgia.

Good luck
