Hi All,
I am very new to the field of nursing. I have a prior bachelor's degree. However, I have recently made up my mind in pursuing Nursing, and aiming to get into an accelerated BSN program in fall 2011. In order to do that, I need to finish my pre-reqs, and I have been unable to get into an Anatomy & Physiology class that would not conflict with my work schedule.
Recently, a friend of mine suggested to take the Anatomy and Physiology class via Ocean county community college that offers the class online along with the lab requirement. I have never seen a lab class being offered online, so I would really appreciate if someone who has taken this class can clarify the following things for me:
1. Is this class legitimate? Does it satisfy the requirement of having an A & P class with a lab?
2. Which schools accept these classes?
To me, it kind of sounds like 'too good to be true' because I am not very sure how an online lab class would work. Although, it would be great if I can take the class online because I would be able to finish my requirements on time by this process. I will be looking forward to hear about your experiences, and any advice regarding online pre-req classes will be great!
Thanks in advance!

This is a legitimate class that people have posted about here. Several have said that it was accepted by their programs. You have to look a little, but you can find posts about courses from the school on this forum.
Thanks for your info! I am going to talk to the program coordinator about the online classes. For some reason, it just seems to be an 'impossible' thing for me...but will surely look into it!

Hi Bidisha,
I am currently enrolled in their A/P I for the Spring Quick Term. I had the same thoughts and feeling as you but am glad I did it. You order all your supplies and microscope through Labpaq. If you are fortunate enough to have access to a microscope then you'd save yourself a lot of money not having to order one.
So far, the professor has been great and VERY helpful. I had a lot of questions in the beginning and issues with using my microscope and he has been great about addressing my concerns. Since I am in the quick term (10 weeks), we have to do 2 labs a week which is kind of a lot of work if you don't pace yourself properly. It's do-able but like I said, a lot of work in a short amount of time. I assume if you take it during a regular semester it should be a lot easier time wise.
Good luck! If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.
oh and btw, they send you a cat for the dissection which you have to keep in good condition cuz you need it for both A/P I and A/P II. Other than that, the labs are pretty easy to do from home.
Hey there,
Thank you very much for all the information. I just submitted my application for admission yesterday online...however, I still haven't heard back from them regarding the registration of classes, so bit worried if I will be able to register for the class for the summer semester or not...let me see what happens. I did exchange few emails with professor Marc Labelle, but haven't been able to talk to him on the phone yet.
How did you find out about the credibility of the course? Do you know which nursing programs you are applying to?
From your profile, I figured out you are in the bay area - CA, I am located in the same area as well...would you mind exchanging email info so that we can be in touch personally?
P.S. They don't send a live cat home, right? Just checking:))

somuchsole can you give me some more info about a&p and micro from ocean county,Did you take them all quick term? Was it very hard? How were the instructors? Were you able to use financial aid? and any other info would be greatly appreciated. I am debating on taking them there or Rio Salada
@Bidisha:
I didn't actually research if any schools will accept it or not. I read a lot of posts here that states that the transcripts doesn't specify that it was an online course. I'm not sure which nursing programs I want to apply to just yet. I figured of course I'll apply to most of the programs in the Bay Area and hopefully get lucky to get accepted.
And no, it's not a live cat. lol it's sealed in a plastic bag with some type of solution which I assume is for preserving.
I'll PM you my email addy.

hi there! no, this is my first semester there and everything has been great so far.
here is what i replied to bidisha:

As for Financial Aid - They do offer financial aid but unfortunately I was not able to qualify since I'm registered less than half time. I'm only taking A/P I which is a 4 unit course. I relied on FA heavily thinking I'd get the tuition reimbursed come to find out afterwards that you only get awarded if you're enrolled at least half time. $600 per class plus roughly another $600 for the lab supplies was quite an expense for me. So, if you enroll at least half time you should be able to qualify for some FA.
If you have any other questions please feel free to ask.
Does it have to be a cat for dissection? How did you keep it in good condition?
@somuchsole:
Thanks for your reply. I still haven't received you IM, so just let me know whenever you IM your mail id. Where in Bay area do you live? Are you currently taking any other classes? If so, where at?
I am planning on enrolling for the summer session of A&P 1 at Ocean...let me see how it goes. Are you taking the summer session as well?
yes, unfortunately it has to be a cat. i already took an anatomy class previously and had the fetal pig. Labpaq provides you with care instructions. Basically, all you have to do is wash it when you receive it and store it in a container in a cool place.
If you do plan on taking A/P from Ocean I would suggest you take A/P I & A/P II as close together as possible. I don't think you'd want too much time to elapse before you take the 2nd half because I don't know how well the condition of the cat will be if too much time passes. For example, most people take it one semester at at time like Fall and Spring. The instructions say if you follow it closely it should last fairly long. It doesn't specify a specific timeline. This is just my thought.
@bidisha:
I just sent you a friend request. I'll just give you my info here. My email address is [email protected].
I am planning on taking A/P II during the summer 10 week session so I can enroll in the Micro class by fall. So, hopefully by then I can start sending out applications to some programs.
Can you give me your email addy also so I can look out for your email?
