A & P and Microbiology

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I've seen several things about how hard A & P and Micro Biology are and people who take them together don't have a life...How hard is it really?

I'm thinking about taking them together Fall 2017 and topping them off with an intro to Spanish class. Does that sound do-able?

I know the prof who teaches Micro and she's very nice, and easy to work with. I took her this semester with Biology 1107, she told me that it was a hard course. I came out of the class with A's on lab and lecture. Now I did study hard, I asked for help when I didn't understand something...We started with like 36 people in the lab and ended with around 18.

I really need to take them together if I want to reach my goal of making it into nursing school by 2018 (with ALL my prereqs out of the way!) so...any insight?

I'm in the same boat! Im taking Algebra and Anatomy/lab this semester. Chem in summer, and then Im supposed to take Physiology and Micro Fall 2017 and I can also apply. I had a nursing student at my college tell me to not take them together though, and just take a little longer with applying.

It totally depends on how dedicated to your studies you are. In my experience, I was a full-time student and full-time employee while enrolled in Micro, A&P II, Intro to Statistics, and Sociology. It was rough but definitely doable as I did it. Just make sure you have your priorities straight and understand that your efforts need to be towards your studies but also understand that you need a break every now and again to keep sane.

Best wishes to you in whatever it is you decide on doing!

I was just writing out my class schedule because I'm only taking 2 classes at most per semester. For the sake of my sanity and our bank account I am taking microbiology and A&P in separate semesters.

I looked at how my school recommends courses be taken so I could take the HESI A2 right after I've done A&P 1, microbiology, and medical terminology. A&P 2 is recommended to be done with NURS 1, but I'm setting myself up to take only courses that require admittance into the nursing program while doing NURS1-4. I'd much rather stretch it out an extra semester or two than I had been planning so I can focus on subjects I know will be challenging. Much better than having to retake anything and still be behind those very same semesters AND the out money for the credit hours. :p

I'm taking Micro and A&P2 together in the coming semester, along with statistics and general psych.

It's absolutely doable. I had a 4-class load last semester and made straight As, I will strive to do the same again.

That being said; I'm incredibly fortunate that my part-time job is home based and my hours for it are elective, so I can dedicate as much time to my studies as needed. I worked for my grades last semester though... It was tough but doable. Surprisingly, it was my art class that took up most of my time.

A good chunk of your success is going to depend on the professor you take - I'm sad that I can't have the same A&P professor this coming semester due to schedule conflict, but I was sure to pick another that came highly recommended.

If you have the time to dedicate to doing both A&P and micro in the same semester, then go for it. But if you've got kids, or have to commit a lot to work etc (which is understandable), then do what you can even if it means that you have to take those classes at different times.

I just completed AP1 and microbiology. I didn't find it to be difficult. I took General Biology over the summer and it was by far the hardest class I have ever taken in my life. I got in A in that class, and after going through that I felt like I could take AP1 and microbiology together and get As in both--and I did. I still think that gen bio class was harder.
