I'm signed up to take A&P II and Microbio this summer. Both are 8 week courses and I would be taking Micro + lab Mondays/Wednesdays from 2pm - 7pm and A&P + lab Tuesdays/Thursdays from 5pm - 10 pm. I also work over 30 hours/week and I'm scared...can I do this? :chair: Is there anyone out there who has attempted the same sort of work/course load and succeeded? I certainly don't want to overload myself and sacrifice my chance to make good grades, but I also need to complete these courses before the fall if possible so that I'm a more competitive applicant for nursing school. If it were you, what would you do? Thanks for any advice ya'll can give me!:bowingpur
I took A&P I during last summer. I loved it!!!! I really liked that I got it done and over with in just 8 weeks. Now it was definitely tough and very time consuming. My family kept wanting me to do stuff but I always had to pass. For those 8 weeks A&P was my life! And I work from home, so I was able to study alot.
I decided to take A&P II and Micro together last fall. I was doing pretty good and could have finished it but things came up and I wasn't able to, I had to drop.
Well I have now decided to take the classes seperately. I am going to take A&P II this fall and Micro next spring. I would love to take them both together this fall because I have to apply to the ADN program in March of next year and I won't be done with Micro yet, but I also want to do very well in the classes and I am not sure if I could have pulled A's in both. I could of gotten at least an A and a B but I want all A's including my labs.
I really wish that I could take A&P II this summer but I am going to be on the road with my husband, so all I can take is an internet course. I am going to take nutrition and get that one out of the way.
Oh, and one of the girl's that I became friends with during the A&P I class that I took in the summer, well she worked part-time and decided to take both A&P II and Micro with me during the fall. She is super smart and very dedicated but she still had a tough time. I would say that is definitely doable during the regular semester if you are very dedicated to your studies. I won't say that it is impossible in the summer but it will be very hard and time consuming and when you throw work in there, well all I can say is good luck!!!
Sorry this is so long. But I do have to say that in a way I can agree with the other poster who said that taking these classes together doesn't even compare to what you get in NS. I always tell myself that people going to medical school have it way harder and they survive. I also had a friend who was pre-dental and he was taking tons of chemistry classes one semester and he made it. We really don't have it all that bad. I just think the hype can scare some people off. But if you set your mind to it I truly believe that you can do anything.
My uncle took A&P I and II in the same semester and he was around 50 at the time. He passed with 3.75 in both. I need to mention, though, that he attacked his studies head on, and all with not a lot of free time available to him. He took an active interest in his subjects and that does a lot more for learning and retention than most of these students who merely take "pre-reqs" and could care less, instead of actually wanting to know more about our beautifully complex human bodies and how to help others with understanding theirs.
Ok, I think I made my decision. I talked to my A&P 1 prof (whom I really like and respect) today and asked her what she thought I should do. I explained that I was taking 4 classes (if you count lab as a class which I do!!!) and working 30+ hours a week, making A's as of right now but that I was concerned about taking A&P 2 and Micro and both labs together this summer while working. She said that even though I was disciplined, I would be INSANE:bugeyes: to take them at the same time during the shortened summer semester.
So, long story short, I've decided to take Micro this summer by itself and take A&P 2 in the fall with the basic chem class. I need A's...and I also need not to lose my mind and end up locked in the looney bin dreaming of being a nurse. Thank you so much to everyone for the encouragement and advice, nurses and pre-nurses are amazing!!!:redpinkhe

Sounds like a smart choice, I'm glad you seem to be on your way. Good luck!!!:heartbeat
Ok, long story short, I have decided to take Micro by itself this summer and take A&P 2 and the basic survey of chem course in the fall. I think it would just be too much, especially considering how competitive nursing school admission is. The college I needed Micro & A&P 2 done so quickly for gives consideration for things besides having the pre-nursing courses completed, so hopefully that will soften the blow of me not having A&P 2 finished when I submit my app. I need A's in these classes...and I also need not to go insane and end up locked in the looney bin raving about biology:bugeyes:. That sounds tough. I'm thinking about taking A&P I and micro biology in 8 weeks semester. Any suggestion?, will that be a suicide? I don't work but I have a seventeen months old daughter.
From what I understand, it's not necessarily suicide, but it is very very very hard. I know from taking it right now that A&P 1 is very study intensive, and I'm sure A&P 2 and Micro are the same way. Depends on how dedicated you are, I guess. I decided not to do both at the same time since I work 30+ hours/week.

I would say a huge negative on that.
I took AP I and II last summer by themselves...the very first day, the professor told us, "If you are trying to take anything else with this class, I highly suggest that you drop it."
AP is an UNBELIEVEABLY intensive course, and so is microbiology. I had class for 5 hours a day, we had an exam every other day, and I spent a minimum of 6 to 7 hours studying---the amount of material IS that staggaring.
