:chair::chair:Did anyone have to do dissection of any animals in a & p 1 lab that attended a community college? If so I am nervous because in high school we had to dissect a fetal pig for biology and i was nervous and as soon as i walked in the classroom i vomited and was ultimately excused from the assignment and am scared that it will happen again. How do I get pass this? please any advice is appreciated.:chair:
Im in A&P 1 at a CC and we will be doing a cat this semester. We already did a mouse, which wasnt so bad. I thought that I wouldnt be able to do it b/c of the sqeamish factor, but it actually turned out that I was the one that did the cutting. There wasnt any smell as it was a freshly euthenized mouse. I'm a little worried about the formaldehyde smell. The lab was SATURATED with the smell and it was making me a little light headed. I think Im going to have to go the Vicks route. We'll see about the cat. I have 2 cats and I think as long as I get one that doesnt look like one of mine I'll be ok. I did notice with the mouse though that once dead animals kind of seem "fake" if anyone understands that sentiment. I think I'll be ok. I dont think I'll do the cutting on the cat. I was so afraid I'd mangle the mouse. I dont think I have a steady enough hand to not totally mangle the cat, esp when we are supposed to be looking at the muscles.
Sheep brain. Cow eye. Skinned a cat. And even MORE dissections in A&P II than in A&P I.
You get over it because you have to. Its what is required to get through the course, which is what is required to get into nursing school. You'll see a lot more gross stuff than these preserved dead animals in the nursing profession. With these there isn't even any blood.
If you rinse your specimen before dissecting it, it helps with the smell a lot.

I am also huge on animal rights and agree that the software is better......aside from animal rights issues I think the software is better b/c in A&P I when we dissected the sheeps brain, cat, and ox eye you basically had to get it right the first time and there were many people in our class that would go too deep when trying to locate superficial muscles etc......for that reason the software is great......I took A&P II online and used the software and loved it. My A&P I class was able to go to a human cadaver lab and participate in an autopsy.......that was way more interesting than any of the animal dissections......I guess b/c I kept thinking these people elected to have their bodies donated to science...anyway I am also kind of weak stomached so I put a little vicks under my nose and did suck on a few halls and the other thing I did was to not look at faces (animals or the cadaver lab) and just try to learn as much as possible; that alone helped me focus on what I needed to gain from the experience.....
Good luck!!!!
