University of Wisconsin Oshkosh accelerated program, applicant advice?

Hi I am currently looking at the UW accelerated program and I am nervous because I'm not sure of how much work experience as a CNA I should have and if a cumulative gpa of 3.1 is good enough. Has anyone applied and been accepted, if so I could use some advice before I apply for the next fall cohort.

Its a great program. I suggest calling and actually talkiing to their recruiter. She will be able to tell you what the current selection committee values. Good luck!

I applied to the May 2012 cohort. I have my phone interview on Wednesday! I'm totally excited! I'm also nervous about my chances of getting in though too. Here's my info:

Biology degree from UW-GB with 3.2 overall GPA, I tried to calculate my 4 highest science grades since that's the GPA they look at. But. My classes weren't a straight transfer to UWO. I had some upper level science classes that would count instead.

I have 2 years CNA experience in Home Health. After speaking with Sue - the accelerated advisor - I put in an internal application at the company I work for and now am in Residential care = CBRF's. Sue is very helpful. For example, I took Human Phys at GB but there was no lab component. Per her suggestion I emailed the Biology Dept. Head with my story and transcript and took the Lab only this past summer. I had to get special approval since they don't split the lecture from lab. I graduated from GB in 2005 and got a B+ in human phys lab! Also Sue's suggestion, I am currently taking Anatomy (with lab) online through Univ. West Virginia. It's going great.

I'd say just read over everything on the website to make sure you have everything you need and are ready for the commitment. I know I am!

Thanks Jillian, I did call and speak to an advisor. I am graduating with my Bio degree in May so I plan on taking a CNA course and Teas Test in January. I was going to apply in Feb for the October cohort but I think I will wait a year get some CNA experience and then go onto apply for the next May cohort. I have checked and I have everything to apply. My admission GPA is a 3.6. I just need to obtain my CNA and take the Teas Test. I am really excited and hope that I get in. I love online classes and feel that this program is going to work perfect for me. Thanks for the reply and I hope you get accepted.

Kristy,

Thank you and good luck to you too! Don't worry about the TEAS. The scores are due about a month after the application deadline. And it's pretty easy :)

I suggest applying this time. Its not uncommon to take a couple times to get accepted and if they have two people that are right at the 'cut off' and one applied the time before i that gives them an edge. I think it will def strengthen you for the next application when you add the cna experience. Good luck

@ evolvingrn

Thanks for the heads up, I will do that then. I wasn't sure if it was worth applying when I know I didn't have much CNA experience. Did you attend this program?

Yep I graduated from it a couple years ago! Great program. I felt very prepared to go out in the nursing force.

Hey Jillian!

I just had my interview last week as well!!

I'm really nervous because I'm not sure how many people have a phone interview compared to how many actually get in. I know around 90 or so usually apply for the May cohort but how many do you think actually get down to receiving a phone interview??

I have around the same GPA as you and have a few years of hospital experience. Do you think that's enough???

Keep me posted!!!

Sarah,

I hope we both get in! I don't know how many get a phone interview either. They said they were getting down to the end though. I'll post on here when I hear either way! You do the same? I'm nervous too! I read on here about other's interviews and they said they didn't get much feedback like during a face-to-face interview. I felt mine went very well and had great feedback. How do you feel yours went?

Good luck!

Jillian

I feel my interview went really well too. They were very nice and the interview seemed somewhat informal. I'm most worried about my GPA keeping me out of the program. I'm hoping that with my experience as a CNA and my decent TEAS score, that will rule out the fact that my GPA in the lower 3's.

Hey guys,

I applied to the October 2011 cohort but was not accepted. I had a 3.1 pre-req GPA and 98th percentile on the TEAS V but I was two classes short on my prereqs and I had no CNA experience. They encouraged me to reapply and I did. After talking to Sue she said the fact that I was not Pre-req complete and not CNA exeperienced it made me not competitive but if I correct that I should be in good shape for the May 2012 cohort. I finished my two pre-reqs this summer and have been working as a CNA in a nursing home since June. I hope that does it.
