I just applied to the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Online Accelerated BS to BSN program. The next cohort will start May 2009. I am excited and curious if any one else is out there applying or if any one else is in the program now. If so how is it?

I'm in the program right now. I love it and would highly recommend it :)

Really? How exciting. Is it extremely difficult? How many hours do you put in a week before the clinicals start? Have you started the clinicals? I could ask you a million questions! I think I have a very good chance of getting in(grades, working experience, CNA) just waiting till they notify us around Christmas.

I'll be honest, it is difficult. But I imagine most accelerated programs are. The biggest thing is to always stay on top of everything, read ahead, and practice those time management skills because you'll need them! I probably put in about 8-10 hours a day of just reading, writing papers, posting online, projects, etc. Sometimes I have to read on the weekends, but usually I do enough during the week that I have weekends and evenings free. Basically I just treat it like a job. I had my first clinical in Oshkosh last month during "bootcamp", and I start my clinicals with my preceptor on Wednesday :) The first couple of months the classes really fly by at a hectic pace, but once clinicals start it slows down a little so you have time to go to clinical and get all your work done. Let me know if you have any more specific questions and I'll do my best to answer them! Getting that acceptance letter is the best thing in the world, so good luck!

Were you able to get scholarships? Do you still have your books? I would like to buy mine used. Is it best to get them at the uw bookstore or online bookstores? Do most of the students decide to keep them? Is all of the testing done online, except for the on campus dates? Are the teachers friendly and organized? What has been your hardest class so far? I could go on for hours! I figure the half hour interview/email is just about why you want to be a nurse and how you will be able to handle the program. I am a mom of three, but the two oldest are in school full time amd the third will be in preschool part time next year. I am weird in that I love school, it makes me feel accomplished. I have been a stay at home for several years, so it feels like I am doing something for myself. I am taking a and P II and developmental Psych right now. I was a pharmaceutical sales rep for three years and am glad to be returning to work. Thanks so much for answering all of my questions. I bet you are super excited about your clinicals. Do you change facilites based on the different clinicals? Are you nervous? Thanks again COurtney

Any suggestions on the best stethosope?

Hi Courtney,

I wasn't able to get any scholarships, but I probably didn't try as hard as I could have either. From what I can tell though there isn't a lot of help out there for 2nd degree people. The financial aid office was able to give me enough to cover tuition though. I do have my books, I will probably keep a few but I will sell some in May when I'm done (I'll be selling my scrubs too then). I got my books on Amazon because that was where I was able to find them the cheapest. The bookstore does have some used, but they told me they often don't have a lot because so many students keep their books. The testing is all done online except for the TEAS test at orientation and then a test at the end during capstone. The teachers have been pretty good for the most part. They are very willing to answer questions and get back to you quickly. Some are more involved than others, but they have all been helpful and want to see you succeed. In my opinion, the ethics class has been the most difficult so far because of the huge workload. Other cohorts warned us about pathophys I&II, but I didn't find them to be too bad. The nursing research class was pretty boring, but I'm not sure how you'd make that fun :) The interview process isn't too bad. You'll be fine as long as you understand all the info they send you very well, especially for the 2nd interview. I don't have any kids, but there are lots of moms in my cohort, so you aren't alone there. I like school too, so I know what you mean :) I am really excited about starting clinicals, I'm going to be at the same hospital for all five rotations, which will be nice. It'll be nice to actually be out there applying all this theory that we've been learning! Did they tell when they're doing interviews? I think mine were in October. Are you in WI?

Oh I almost forgot, I have the Littmann II S.E. Lightweight stethoscope. A lot of my classmates have the Littmann Classic and they like that too. Our instructors recommended the Littmann because it's a good, solid stethoscope. Mine was about $60 I believe and some styles come in pretty colors too :nurse:

Hi-don't mean to butt in to your conversation :D,but just wanted to add my :twocents: about stethoscopes!

Check out www.allheart.com for great prices on scopes. I have also included a link to the Littmann product specifications page...It compares all Littmann scopes and rates their overall performance on a scale of 1-10, as well as discusses the acoustics.

I personally would spend a little more and get a better quality scope. I have the Cardiology III--wonderful! One of the Nurse Techs has the Classic II S.E.--she tried mine and couldn't believe the difference!!! But again, it comes down to personal choice. (the only down-fall is that there are limited colors :()

Good luck with school.

Good luck. i got on the waiting list last year with just under a 4.0 and a fair amount of cna experience. they had 121 people competing for 26 spots, the staff was even shocked at the large number of applicants as they had expected around 75..... i know that october in the past has been their bigger batch of applicants. i think its fairly difficult to get into the program now that it has become better known. do you have all your class already completed? good luck.

They seem to have less applicants this year. This might be due to the economy......Did you attend a different school? I had my first clinical day as a CNA and I am loving it! I am even working in long term care. I thought I would hate it, but it was very rewarding! I am really hoping I will get in.......

I called to check that all of my application material made it in and I asked how many applicants they had. They said they still had time left to receive applications, but it was less than previous years.
