NVCC Online Nursing Program

U.S.A. Virginia

For those of you attending NVCCs nursing program; What are your thoughts on their online program? I am seriously considering applying for it rather than the traditional program. I have taken several classes online as well as some on campus and felt as though the classes taken on campus (especially NAS 161) required so much self study that I might as well have taken it online anyhow. The 4 consecutive terms is very appealing.

From what I have heard Nursing school is a ton of reading and self study. Is that true? Are the lectures good or are they just boring. I heard some teachers either read from the book or off a powerpoint. Is that true? And, do you feel that there is too much information that you got out of lectures that you would have missed on your own, if you were in the online program?

I need the dirt on the whole situation. I don't want to get into the online program and wish I had done the traditional program. I am a 4.0 student (as I should be considering I don't work) and I am very hard working and motivated.

Thanks in advance!

Wow, you really did do well on HESI! Good job!

I have met people who took it more than once too. I also met people who had score in high 90s! I agree, you have to be prepared for the test. One of my problems on a test day was that I had to drive for hour and half through the ice storm in February to get to Springfield. Not being used to long commutes, I was shaking by the time I got there. I was happy with my score, but of course could have done better.

You poor thing. We had to drive across country through that horrible storm from Oklahoma, when our son was 6 months old. NOT FUN. That was back when we moved here. People in the high 90s are the people I usually stick to in class! They are a good influence.

TEST help: Appears they do run a few group study sessions for the pre entrance exam at MEC

What about the accelerated track? Is it really intense? I know that classes are mainly held in Arlington(?) and four consecutive semesters but can you chose to take lab and lectures at MEC if it's available that semester?

Also what if one starts the online program but then doesn't like it and wants to switch to the traditional is that possible?

I'm stuck on which to apply to for the Fall.

Maybe I should have started a new thread but I'd figure I'd get more responses here.

Your best best would be to talk with a MEC student councilor.

I heard that they were closing down the Arlington campus and doing everything from MEC, but could be wrong. Ialso heard soem big changes to the nursing program starting next fall, but you know how rumors work!!

Traditional vs Accerated. Not a huge difference at the present time. Traditional get the summer off, while accelerated continue with classes/lab/clinicals,thus they finish 1 semester earlier. If you can get your "fillers" (psychology's, med terminolgy, pharmacology etc etc) complted prio to course start, that helps ease the study load! May be difficult to go from accerated to tradiotnal as there is only soo many spots for each program. Best of luck

I am in the process of applying to the NVCC nursing program. I have already taken all of my pre-reqs and I also have an associates at Nova now. However, my gpa in my previous associates wasn't that great (2.34) darn calculus and accounting classes!. Although with my pre-req's I've received all B's and C's, however, its not helping raise my GPA passed a 2.4. I am hoping to re-take some of the classes I took in my previous associates to get a better GPA. I have pretty decent results from the Teas exam (all above 80%)

Last year, they used to only require a curricular GPA of 2.5 which I would have received, however, this year they changed it to a cummulative GPA of 2.5

My question here is has anyone had a mediocre GPA and still got in?

Specializes in Cardiac Nursing.

I just applied for the Online nursing program for May of this year and am on a wait list in case someone drops. I have a 3.9 GPA and had really high TEAS scores, so for the online program I would think you need above what I have to get in.

However, I was told by a counselor at MEC that last year NVCC accepted everyone that applied to the traditional RN program, so I imagine that program is far less competitive.

Good luck to you!

Kris

Well, this post of mine is very old. I didn't apply to the online nursing program because I found out too late that I needed to take CHM 101. I am now in the Traditional program less than 3 weeks away from finishing up my first year!!!

I heard from a girl who applied last year to the online program that started summer 2009 and she said it was extremely competitive and that basically nobody got in. Sounds like the same thing happened this year. Not really sure what the deal with that is, but it all worked out for me so I don't care.
