Have a few questions about obtaining in VA license by endorsement

  1. I may be moving to Virginia in the next few months, and to be prepared, would like to obtain a RN license by endorsement.

I am from Minnesota, passed the NCLEX and have been working as an RN for 6 months. MN participates in NURSYS, so I submitted a verification form, and then applied for a VA license and paid the fees. Status currently reads "pending." (A checklist of items for application is supposed to pop up, but it hasn't yet, and I'm getting impatient, lol).

I know that when applying for out of state licenses, it is usually required that you submit a background check and fingerprints. I cannot find those instructions on the VA board of nursing. Anyone know if I need to do that?

Also, VA participates in the nurse licensure compact. Even though my original MN license is not from a compact state, will my new VA license grant me the privilege to work in other compact states once I declare residency in VA? Just curious.

    Thanks!

Congrats on moving to VA! You will love VA. It's a great state. I would call the Board of nursing and ask about the finger prints and background check. They will be able to advise you immediately. Also, when you move to VA and have a permanent residence your license will become a compact license once you are at your residence for 90 days. If you switch over to a VA license regardless if your first license was compact or not, you will be a part of the compact holding a VA license. I would also call the BON frequently because they sometimes slack and take a while to get things done. When I applied for my NCLEX I had to email the boss because it was 8 weeks and my checklist still was not complete and by the end of that day it was completed. Stay on top of them!!! Good luck to you!

I obtained my Va license via endorsement back in 2013. It's fairly easy and had a quick turnaround time (about a week or so). If I recall correctly, I didn't have to go get fingerprinted. KellyRN is right. Easiest way is to call. I had a question as well, and whomever I spoke with was very helpful. It's definitely one of the easier states to get a license via endorsement. Good luck.

I just wanted to follow up with you, Im in the same process but from another state. How long after your check list popped up did it take to obtain your license?

Not long at all! About 1-2 weeks

Has anyone applied for a license by endorsement in Virginia recently? My application has been pending for 4 weeks. I just want to know if anyone else has waited this long for licensure by endorsement.

I applied for my license by endorsement in October and I still have not received it. Each time I try to call the VA BON I am placed on hold for 30+ minutes and can never get through to anyone.

You probably already know this since your posting was from Feb, 2015---

Does Virginia give you a license number online once it is processed (by endorsement)? or you have to wait until you receive it on the mail to know your license number? I hope I can get it online once it's processed so I can start to work sooner

So I filed for an VA endorsement yesterday and did my fingerprints as well yesterday so my question is how long does it usually take? Online it says 30-45 business days but I already have a job lined up and they don't want to wait that long. Any recent people have any input? I didn't expect to find a job so fast after just moving here.
