Advice for 2014 UVA hopeful!!

U.S.A. Virginia

Hi everyone!

I was hoping I could get a little advice about UVA's CNL program. This looks like an excellent program and I will be applying for a May 2014 start date (deadline is Oct 1). I'm basically putting all my eggs in one basket with this one, but I have fallen in love with the school and the program! ;)

Here are my current stats:

- Graduating Magna Cum Laude from Liberty University (May 2013) with a BS in Healthcare Management. (3.7 GPA)

- I have volunteered at the local hospital both at the information desk and as a patient representative in the emergency department. The info desk was 1 day per week, and the ED was 1 day every other week--would have liked every week for that one, but demand was high for this position. My volunteer experience is not as extensive as I'd like, especially since I've had to take time off for my CNA class, but I plan on resuming it upon completion.

- I'm currently in the last week of a CNA program, where it seems very likely I will be nominated class valedictorian (I was surprised they even practiced that, but it is what it is I guess :)).

- I satisfy all pre-req requirements except for A&P 1&2, which I intend to complete over the summer.

- Once I pass state boards for my CNA licensure, I plan on getting a limbo job mostly for clinical experience while I work my regular job (mostly to save money for school since I have a husband and a young son as well).

I guess what I'd like to know is what anyone's experience has been like with UVA, what their stats were like, and what the interview is like (from what I understand, its just a short phone interview, but I'd like to know what typically gets asked, etc).

I'd appreciate any insight anyone has on the subject!!

I'm need to check this board more!! I'm doing a lot of praying about my application and hearing from UVA about an interview. Now that I know emails are sent on Fridays to schedule interviews for the following weeks, I will be checking my email 100 times a day! I thought we scheduled them by phone, but at least now I know its via email. AHH I'm so so nervous, but praying for an email this Friday for a phone interview the following week!

Question: If we do not get a phone interview is that pretty much the end of our consideration to the program? I'd assume the phone interview is given to the people the school really wants to know more about and is highly considering for the program.

Just saying hi to everyone waiting for December 21st—hopefully we are future classmates!

I have read this message thread a few times now and am hoping for all of us. I watched a documentary last night that I wanted to share with you called The Waiting Room. It documents a day in the ER of a hospital down the street from where I live in Oakland, CA. It shows the need for healthcare reform as people return again and again to the ER for refills for prescriptions and high blood pressure medications—those who cannot get adequate primary care end up needing more costly treatments as their preventable/treatable conditions escalate. The CNA who manages the waiting room also shows what a difference love and kindness can make as the patients navigate the system.

It is streaming this week on PBS: Video: The Waiting Room | Watch Independent Lens Online | PBS Video

Also, I think Soulshine posted this on another thread a few years ago, but to help with the waiting: The American Nurse Project

And my interview is this afternoon! So, so excited!

awildsoul,

Thank you for sharing the link to this documentary. I look forward to watching it this weekend when I get a spare moment!

Good luck to you in your interview, and I second the hope that we end up classmates!

I was wondering the same thing. One of my classmates got an email about a phone interview for next week today and said his application was complete around the 20th. With my app being completed so soon after that (the 23rd), I am wondering if I am not even getting a phone interview myself, or if I will perhaps be in the next wave of people being alerted next Friday.

Thanks for sharing and good luck on your interview! I'm hoping we all will be classmates as well! Let us know how the interview goes :)

The interview went well--at least I enjoyed it. It was short, friendly and relaxed.

What I learned: I want to go to a school that I can believe in and love. I don't mean school spirit, but the mission and the philosophy and I was curious if what is written on the website would come through in the interview. It did! :) I also want to go to a school that is pushing the boundaries of nursing and helping it to evolve to meet the world's needs & the interview confirmed that UVA is striving to do that.

I prepared by creating a list of possible questions she might ask me and questions I wanted to ask her and writing down little notes for things I wanted to remember to mention, but when we started talking I ended up getting lost in the conversation and totally forgetting my notes. Oh well. My point is tho---don't stress about it. Just remember why you want to be a nurse and go from there. :)

All the best,

J

Thank you for your post!! It has made me feel a bit more relaxed as my interview is on Tuesday!! I have been preparing a list of questions as well, but many of mine were answered at the open house. The open house was my confirmation that UVA was the place I saw my future!! Good luck to you as you wait until December 21st!!

So glad to hear it went well! I truly believe UVA is where I'm meant to be. Prayerfully I will get an interview as well :)

I just got my interview email!!! I'm so excited I'm practically jumping out of my skin! :D

I bet you did! Congrats! I thought they were only sending out email on Fridays, though! You are lucky!! Good luck on your interview!

Hey all,

I just finished my phone interview, and I'm still vibrating from the experience. I was nervous and excited, and I hope that I conveyed everything about my desire to pursue this degree in this community.

My interviewer was very gracious and informative, and I wasn't asked any "gotcha" questions. Like awildsoul said, it was all in the service of communicating why UVA and why nursing. I really enjoyed hearing about my interviewer's role in the school of nursing and her insights into the overall UVA community.

I hope that my interview was compelling, but since there's nothing else I can do, I guess I have to relax and hope for the best this December. I am planning on visiting Charlottesville next weekend, so that's something to look forward to!

Best of luck to everyone who's anticipating their interview.

Thank you! Yeah, I thought they were only sending them out on Fridays too, but I guess what actually happens is that you get the email on Thursday and call them back to pick your time on Friday morning.
