Specializes in ICU.

Hey!

Anyone taken the PBDS test? Anyone know anything about it? Hints/tips. My recruiter is telling me that to work in NY, NY I'll probably need it as a lot of the facilities require it. I work ICU - focus on neuro and surgical.

I appreciate any input!

Thanks!

I haven't taken it yet. I have found out through my research that a lot of Maget Hospitals use it. I have also discovered that it has been used to weed travelers out. I was original designed as an educational tool to help assess areas that all employees not just travelers need more education in. There are study guides available. Your company should be able to get you a copy. I was a member of the NYSNA (that's the union for NY nurses) I would be surprised if that's something that the nurses in NY would stand for. New Yorkers are pretty blunt and in your face in regards to what they will stand for. I lived in Jersey for 22 years. I know about New Yorkers. Anyway, if your recruiter can't get you a copy there are places that you can get a copy. I don't for if it was this site or delphiaforums that people were sharing copies of it. Anyway, good luck in NY!!!.

Specializes in NICU and Pediatric ER.

Hey!

I just had to take if for my hospital. I am a NICU nurse so wasnt ICU. But is was really easy. It is common things that happen often. I personally think it is to make sure that they will not have to do alot of training with a traveler as with travelers you are supposed to be ready to go. Just take a deep breathe and you will do fine. I only have 2 years experience and I exceeded expectations. So as long as you have experience you should do fine. It is an essay test so make sure that you list absolutely everything you would do ex: call the doctor etc.

Quoted from another site:

There are 3 parts to the test.

Part 1: "Startling statements". They give you a statement that is made by a patient, family member or an MD. Then you have to write how you would respond to the statement or question in 1-2 sentences. Think Psych nursing...be therapeutic and you have that part licked.

Part 2: 7 questions re: a problem with an IV and you have to write how to fix the problem. Then 8 pictures involving IV's and you have to state what the problem is and how you would deal with it. ie: Infiltrated IV...D/C IV, warm compresses, notify MD and restart IV.

Part 3: (The hardest): 10 different video scenarios and you have to figure out what the problem is and write down EVERYTHING that you would do and the rationale behind your interventions. I found this difficult. Some were so blatant while others were obscure and could be 2 or 3 different things but you were only allowed to state one problem. Study up on MI, Pneumos, Perfed bowel, Sepsis, DKA, (sorry can't remember the rest)..."

Beth Israel in NYC gives this exam prior to working there. More and more hospitals are doing it.

I personally hate the exam!
