Labor Disputes

I have applied to work some strikes with US Nursing. I would like some feedback from anyone out there that has actually worked a labor dispute. I know there is great money to be made. I got the info from a friend of a friend etc that worked the strike in DC a couple of years ago. They only have one active strike going right now in PA and I would like to a couple of weeks.

Any info, anyone??? Thanks! Sassy

Wow. I have been a union member and walked a picket line for weeks. I know what it is like see scabs cross the line to work, slowing down the negotiation process. I could never do that to fellow nurses who want fair wages and benefits so they can support their families.

And... I am all for you getting better working conditions and wages but someone has to take care of the patients while you are trying to get what you want and need.

I'm sorry this one just made me :chuckle, and then I thought about the kind of pt. care that they might give, and it gave me chills:eek:!

Well, I know that anyone who wants to go and work these strike situations makes some of you very angry but.... I have never been a member of a union and don't plan on it. In my opinion just as you have yours, I don't think nurses should strike. If you don't like your employment situation.... go somewhere else. It isn't like there are not lots of jobs out there. But.... if nurses choose to strike.... so be it. The patients must be cared for and there isn't enough management to get that job done. So.... an opportunity to better my financial situation also.... is what I see. Everyone has a right to an opinion.... and there you have mine. You strike... you win.... I work while you strike.... I win!

Okay here are my thoughts and please refrain from the flames LOL. I was in a teamster union once and it got me absolutely nothing except a 5 cent raise in 3 years. I have never crossed a picket line though and from what I hear it is very scarey. Be careful if you choose this type of work. I also must say I could not walk out on patients. My conscious would not let me. I would leave nursing first.

I am wondering how long sassyfrassy has been a nurse, and whether s/he has worked under the conditions that precipitate a strike?

I have been a nurse for 22 years. I have worked in large ER's, small CCU's, Oncology, HOme Health, Hospice, and Pediatrics. And no... I have not ever been subjected to conditions that warranted a strike. I have never worked for a facility or organization that was unionized. Neither have they been jobs where I felt a union was needed. My dad was a big union man with Southwestern Bell Telephone and I understand the reasoning behind a strike. I am just saying I do not agree with it in nursing and I am looking to better myself financially just as those who go on strike.

I may go and work one strike and say "hey.... this is not for me" but I won't know until I actually go and do it.

I did hear from someone in another travelers club that they sometimes house you on site, you cannot always leave or they bus you in. She said it was scarey and never went back. Give you credit if you want to try it though.
