grad school and travel nursing

Anyone here in graduate school while doing travel nursing? I got into a program and I'm just wondering if anyone here has done it and what their experience has been.

I believe the member travelingdorsey is doing just that in an NP program. Search for her on here, she and I have had discussions about it, you could private message her, although she is only on every few months. I think it sounds like a fun idea, but good luck finding preceptors for clinical…

Hey icuman! That was my first thought so I've already begun looking and asking around. Of course once clinicals start I won't be traveling and will return to my home state. I just want to travel for a while to a few states and my staff job never allowed me the time or energy to do that.

I'll look her up and ask about her experience.

I'm doing this right now. I am an FNP student and just started working as a travel nurse in January. I'm only 3 hours from my home and return to do clinicals on my days off. I am negotiating with the hospital I'm at now to extend my contract into July, but with a month off in April for school work and clinicals. So far it has been working out well. I told the hospital when I interviewed about days I needed off for school (very minimal) and they have been great. Traveling so far has been much more flexible than when I was staff :) Good luck to you in your studies and travels!

Thank you smallnurse.

Might I ask, how do you finance your degree?

This year I got a scholarship that covers half of my tuition which has been really wonderful. I take out loans for a 1/4 and then pay the other 1/4 out of pocket.

That's fantastic small nurse. The tuition is the only thug holding me back but I want to go.

I am considering taking on a local travel nursing gig before I start nurse practitioner school this coming fall as well. Hubby and I have quite a lot of loans (student + mortgage). Smallnurse, are you currently enrolled in school full time or part time? The first year of the school I applied to is mainly didactic but still 8-10 credits per quarter. Wondering how many people have done this and what their experiences are?

I also have questions about travel nursing and returning to school for my FNP or WHNP. I have 2 kids and a husband and he thinks it would be a great idea to be a travel nurse locally while in school for my FNP/WHNP at least for 1st year. My concern is that I left the "hospital" nursing 2 years ago and have been doing "community health" and "Office" nursing since then. I'm thinking I might have to return to "hospital" atmosphere again before I took on such an option.

Are there any travel nurses with families doing an np program?

I'm finishing up my MSN ed and then I'll be attending a NP program this Fall. Started travel nursing last summer. I kept my per diem job at home and I spend about half the year there and half traveling with my spouse. No kids. Just fur babies. So far all the NP programs I've spoken to have been very supportive of the travel nursing gig.

I love it!

Wow - this is a great post. I've started travel nursing when I happened to be in the middle of the RN-MSN education program at . I'm so glad others have posted here.

I've noticed, there are several challenges with travel nursing and going to school (I'm a dialysis nurse) but in California the pay is great and I love the people I have met. I am thinking about getting into a Family NP program that is online but involves a once a month meeting on campus.
