Hi all,

I am in touch with American Mobile to begin my adventure in travel nursing. Has anybody worked with this company? What have your experiences been like with them? Give me the good, bad, and ugly!

Thank you in advance!

AMN knowingly housed me in an apartment complex that previous travelers complained of being UNSAFE. You can't trust them.

I would have to say that AMN is like other companies. They are there to make money, keep that in mind. I have had 2 assignments with them and am currently looking at other companies because I feel ready to go out on my own. They gave me good housing, safe and in a good area, not exactly great but it was nice. No drug deals nearby type of thing. I did however get paid way less than other companies were paying their travelers. I worked with 10-15 and I asked them specifics. There were also travelers who got more in their housing package, as standard, than I did. My recruiter was good, she was very helpful but I did feel like I was being pushed in certain directions. I have noticed that they all do that though. Their job is to find people to fit spots so if I could fit it, they will try to encourage me to take it. Also, they are one of the largest companies so they often have openings where you will want to go in your specialty so that is also something to consider. Just be careful, I still haven't gotten my security deposit back from them and it has been more than 13 weeks because that was my previous assignment. They said it was in a paycheck but it isn't there and there isn't an extra amount of money there either. They say that they paid it but I can't see it so I am out of it since I can't find anyone who can show it to me. They have been absolutely no help in that matter. Just be VERY careful when dealing with them. That is my suggestion. Good luck and happy nursing!!!

Watch your paychecks closely. Keep an accurate log of each clock in/clock out, lunch break, etc... Be very precise because they will try to screw you over in the money department, every chance they get.

I am a new travel nurse and have had several recruiters "working for me". I recently took an offer provided through AMN and I feel that I got screwed over. I am licensed through MN and got an offer in California. I only have a license through MN and was told to "get a flight out to Cali as soon as possible" to do a live scan for fingerprints. I have a previous petty misdemeanor dui in MN back in '04 and as in compliance with the board of Cali nursing I reported it. I brought this concern up with AMN right from the start and was "reassured" that it was not a problem and they actually came back with certian hospitals that either don't take first time travelers or as with the VA (even though I have 12 years of service) that they don't accept anyone with a previous conviction. I aknowledge the fact that I have this stain on my record and I am always very open, honest, and forthwright with this information. The recruiter "assured me" that it should not be a problem. After reading through the Ca board of nursing's requirements on the reporting of any previous alcohol related conviction policy, I raised a concern about the amount of time that it would take me to get my licsence. After being put in contact with a quality assurance representative, they said that with the live scan it would still only take only 2-3 weeks to get my Ca license vs the 6-8 weeks if I just did the app through the mail. That was not the case. After I spent 1600 dollars on a flight and cab fare when I turned in my application at the board of Ca nursing, even with all my supporting documents about my old conviction, they still said that my application would have to go through a review board and that would take 4-8 weeks. Bottom line: if the facility is willing to extend the offer and the review board approves my license, I am obligated to wait 2 months before I start working instead of the 3 weeks. This in addition to the fact that I could have just spent 230 dollars, instead of flying out to Ca just to wind up with the same amount of time for licensure as if I just mailed it in.***!!! This was my main concern from the get go and they totally placated me into thinking that it was no problem whatsoever. I had an offer to start out in MN where I am licensed within one week, but only after I accepted the position in Ca. Now I feel stuck with a job that may or may not still be legally valid and that I have wasted 1600 dollars flying out to Ca when I could have just mailed my app in and gotten the same turn around time. Right now they are trying to find me a short term 6 week assignment in another state to fill in the gap but I still feel like a sucker! This is not a great first impression and I feel that I have learned alot about how this whole recruiter thing shakes out. ie bold faced lies, the same as army recruiters! You would have thought that I learned my lessons! Guess not :(

Maybe it's not your lesson to be learned. It sounded like you were upfront and straight forward with everyone, they just didn't do the same for you. Why is there no recourse for the honest individual when confronted by a mass of dishonesty???

Are people seriously traveling for $20/hour? The person who traveled to Hawaii for 27/hour? Really? I make 18/hour and work like a dog. I thought I was low paid. Good grief, at those rates, I will stay home!

Specializes in ICU, forensics,.

Its too bad the people who make out travelers assignments and decide to float them every four hours only knew the truth to "making the big bucks"

:twocents::rolleyes:

Another reason I'm leaving traveling after my current assignment. It's just become too difficult for me to float all the time, sometimes 3 times per shift. It's unsafe & is burning me out. I'm also losing ICU experience b/c they are consistently floating me to step down units & the floor.

AMN charged me $30/month for the washer & dryer that was ALREADY in the apartment (it was in ALL apartments at this complex). Crazy, no??

They also charged me a $30/month to rent a microwave. Interesting.

One place charged me $60 for flee cleaning, when my pet has never once stepped outside.

My recruiter was never reachable by phone. Not once. It was all returning voicemails.

I hope the company goes under. Hate them with a passion.

Thank you for the heads up. The most recent hospital I was working at was using AM. I am in a very rural area and staffing is horrible. That is why the hospital is using travelers and AM at that. The only good thing I have heard is they are put up at the nicest apt. community in the county. However, this area is so small there is not anything else for them to choose from. I do not know any of the travelers well enough to have asked them what fees they are being charged. The 3 travelers I met told me the best assignments are in Washington state and obviously California.

I never worked with them. I spoke with them but heard horror stories. I am now working with Flexcare and love it. Congrats on deciding to travel! You will love it.
