salary--dfw

U.S.A. Texas

Hi I was wondering if anyone knew the starting or average salary of an RN in the DFW area?

from the website @ Parkland

RN I minimum $23.88, midpoint $29.84

RN II minimum $25.30, midpoint: $31.62

RN III minimum $26.81, midpoint: $33.52

You must remember that although these are the ranges of salaries, that is not necessarily what they actually get when they are new hires. As a manager, I had these same type of ranges, however there was a lot more to it than that. Basically it was a mathematical calculation of what the salaries were but then you had to look at the salaries of other people on the floor already that had comparable years of experience as the person you wanted to hire. You then had to decide how much less you were going to offer because you were not allowed to offer the midpoint or even what the staff person already working for you was making because the hospital did not want new hires making more money than the "old" staff. And I can tell you from my experience NONE of the old staff made even the midpoint of the salary range because the salary range was updated to reflect inflation but the old staff salaries weren't, so basically the ranges were a crock because you still had to base the salary offer on that of the old staff. 99% of the time, when I did the mathematical equation that would have gotten me the salary in the example ranges, the sum of the equation was much more than the range itself. Very convoluted. But it is stuff like this that the hospitals use to keep the salaries down.

This salary range at Parkland is pathetic for the cost of living and I'd be willing to bet that very few people are making the mid or high range of the examples.

The best deal I have seen from any nurse that I know is an RN with 1 year of CCU experience and is making 45/hour in NYC and rents a nice house on Staten Island for 1500/month (4 bed 2 bath nice yard and schools). No property tax, signed a long term lease and while she has no plans to ever buy a home, she chucks away almost 2 grand/month in savings without being married... and she gets all of the fun of NYC and the travel deals, food, culture etc...

Well I moved from NY this year and I can honestly say dont get fooled by all the hype with the $45/hr pay rate. When I worked as an RN there I was making about $40/hr staff at a hospital. I moved to DFW and was making about 24/hr and after the taxes, the take home pay is very comparable. We get taxed by the feds, state, and the city in NY. I used to get over $1000 taken out my check in JUST taxes. Not to mention the high cost of living in NY...it's ridiculous.

Now, dont get me wrong if it was just for nursing I would have stayed in NY because the nurses I worked with were very progressive. NY has better health insurance than I was ever offered at any hospital in Texas. I don't understand for the life of me, how I have health insurance and go to the ER and end up with a bill...that's unheard of in NY. I just loved nursing overall there. I left my staff position at the hospital in DFW and got an agency position that pays 38/hr. I work 8-4 5 days a week. I get paid every week and it's all good.

Parkland hospital may be an option for you. If you specialize the pay is around 26.00 per hr, with a hefty sign on bonus.
